Great movie that I would imagine was inspired by him..... but he got very freaky and paranoid as time went on.

BTW...if you've never seen "Searching For Bobby Fischer", you should. Here's a clip with a Tony Shalhoub cameo. Loved everyone in this movie. And a great teaching piece for young children about what's truly important in life. Try not to get choked up when watching this movie.....

    The clip:

    <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nDZSqnzXQJc&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nDZSqnzXQJc&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

edit: looks like all the parts are available on youtube.... so grab it while you can.

I might catch some heat for this...but the world's a better place with him gone. I can appreciate what he did for the game of chess, but as a human being he was pretty scummy.

Josh Waitzkin is actually a real person. But he gave up chess a long while ago. Now I think he teaches Karate or something like that.

I agree with you 100%, hearing him damn near cheer on the 9/11 attacks while hoping for the US to get wiped out makes me ill and certainly doesnt make me feel bad for the guy.

I don't think non-chess players can truly appreciate how absolutely amazing his run was in the early 70s. Simply an impossible level of play. Ridiculous dominance against all of the best players in the world.

Right, I realized it was about Waitzkin. Re: Fischer, I really think he was mentally ill.... a true paranoid disorder, because he showed the eccentricities early on. I don't think it was a matter of him simply being anti-American or a racist strictly from a values point. I mean when he took on the world's best players, it wasn't as if (if I remember correctly) that he disgarding representing the United States. I would be an autopsy/CAT scan would reveal actual brain trauma consistent with an organic thought disorder.

Also, from what I understand he had a problem with the US and the way they handled a lot of things both personally and with competitions.

I never took it as if he was rooting for the deaths of innocent people. It was more like a "This is what happens to you when you think you can control everything," which by the way is the way many people felt about the attacks of 9-11. It's just so happens that Fischer is a prominent figure in the world and his words were advertised whereas your local neighbor just goes to work in his 9-5.

This is the one and only post that's going to go off on this tangent.

It'd be unfortunate for a Bobby Fischer thread to get locked.

His anti-American sentiment was well noted in any of his obituaries. Funny that he was used as a pawn in the cold war hysteria. Dig the pun!

But from what I read he absolutely dominated. Single handily making chess a popular sport again.
