    Wireless router question

I just switched my wired router to a new wireless router that has ethernet ports in the back, because we just got a new laptop for the house and I'd also like to go online with my PS3 without having to switch the ethernet cable from the PC to the PS3.

Anyways, I've kept my PC plugged into the router via cable (and I've disabled the wireless card on the PC), because it's in the same room as the router so there's no need to keep it wireless. However, these first few days, my internet's been running a lot slower, I'm getting a lot of "Page not Loaded" errors on Firefox, and I've even been given a new IP address.

Is there some reason this is happening with a new router? Is it because I have it plugged in via cable that this is happening? I tried for a bit with it just wireless by pulling the cable and enabling the wireless card, and it seemed to be running even slower, even though I'm only a few feet away.

Any help would be great fellas.

    Re: Wireless router question

Is your internet running slow on your PC that is plugged directly into the router? In that case there may be some firmware update that needs to be applied to your router.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with pages not loading before but it seems like its a 50/50 shot for any page to load on the first try.

How do I apply firmware updates to the router?

Go to the website of your router manufacturer
        Download the new firmware
Log into your router and there should be a tab or setting to update the firmware.

make sure to write down any config and/or settings you have setup the router for though because updating the firmware resets all the settings on the router back to factory defaults usually

Whatever you do, don't get a Linksys. I had one, and it just went bad after about 6 months.

Interesting. I've only heard good things about the Linksys.. specifically the WRT54G.

                Re: Wireless router question

i had a similar problem with my wireless network, only my roommate next door was getting a slow connection though he was connected through wireless and i was plugged into the router and my connection was fine.

a firmware update is the most likely solution

either you can goto the company's website to update your firmware

or you can get better firmware through either dd-wrt or tomato.

if you choose one of those, pay good attention and follow instructions otherwise theres a chance you can screwup flashing the router and end up with a brick cause it violates the warranty.

i used dd-wrt on my linksys wrt54gs and i got significant boost as far as my connection. even my roommate got a better connection too cause we changed the signal strength on the router giving him a better connection.

pretty much the benefit of using dd-wrt or tomato gives you more options and tweaks for your router than the firmware supplied by the company.

theres the links for dd-wrt and tomato

I would not recommend a user put 3rd party firmware on their router if they don't even know how to begin with.
