    need help...Sony/Samsung.Sharp HDTV LCD 40+

In the market for one now I'd like to upgrade from my Samsung Slimfit HDTV.

    Any suggestions?

it'd be used as a gaming tv along with blu ray stuff.

    1080p OR 720p

Friends all have samsung sets, sony I feel have been lacking and sharp's aquos is said to have the nciest picture so...

    Which would you recommend?

DO NOT get a Sharp. They all suffer from horrible banding that, when noticed, will ruin your enjoyment of the set. You want a great TV? Many people say this is the best 1080p on the market.

This site says that it's retail value is $3300, but it in fact is sold at most places anywhere from $1700-2200.

If you really want to make your head spin and read about each tv - pros and cons from actual owners go here: www.avsforum.com

It is worth registering and reading. No matter what tv you get, you are going to want to calibrate it and get the most of it...these guys can help. Be forewarned...you may read so much about the sets you want, and hear about all the issues and problems, that it will make you shy away from buying anything! Better to know what you are getting though...

I have been waiting to pull the trigger on the Samsung 5271...want to see if price drops before or after Superbowl.

I picked up this tv about 2 weeks ago. Picture quality is great. They have another model almost exactly the same but the contrast ratio is 15,000 to one instead of 10,000 to one like this one. I looked at them both side by side in Best Buy and could barely tell a difference. The higher contrast one was like 400 bucks more so I settled with this one. It sells for 1800 plus tax at Best Buy. I saved alot of money by buying it online. Whichever one you go with look on Amazon and Newegg. You can sometimes get free shipping and you don't have to pay taxes.

I've decided on a 720p one, because anything under 55 with 1080p is very undiscernable apparently. the new 120 hz ones look cool but will be available 2, 3 or 4 months from now which is too long.

I might get a 42 to 46 inch set, but I've narrowed it down to samsung

I have a 46" Samsung 1080p, and you can tell the difference between 1080p and non. It's not a huge difference, but you can definitely tell. Over at avsforum and Cnet I read that 42" was the minimum viewing size. Anyway, I recommend either the Olevia I linked to or the Samsung KC Fire linked to (which is the one I own). Both are great sets.

It all depends on whether the format can support the resolution. Television is broadcast now in 1080i, but you can get hd-dvd and blu-ray discs in 1080p that, combined with a 1080p player, will look better than 720p. Keep in mind that if you have a 720p TV and the hd-dvd outputs in 1080p, your television or the hd-dvd player will have to downgrade the signal. Then again, when watching a 1080i television show, the television will have to upconvert signal.

As for sports games, they do look better (and smoother with the progressive scan). However, you need to make sure your system is connected to fully output 1080p. Otherwise you're getting another upconversion.

I'd go with 1080P so you're all set for the future and in a couple of years wishing you had just paid a little more to get it.

I don't think TV will be broadcasting in 1080p for many, many years (and by then we may be on super hi-def). Not enough people own 1080p sets, and we're still not even at the point where every show is broadcast in hi-def. But if he's going for over 42", then I would definitely get 1080p.

                        Thanks for the responses

I just got back from trying to "physically' see what i might get.

                        And...I came to a conclusion.

                        40' is the new 32'
and 46 is the new 40'

It seems to me that when i got my 32 I thought it was big but seeing the 40's now which some friends of mine have I'm seeing they aren't THAT big ANYTHING 42 is pretty much not there it's almost like 42 doesn't matter anymore.

So my choices are 40 OR 46. And 46 looked just about right it's just that from what i can see 46 inch sets are ALL 1080p now regardless

Tomba, if your going to watch Blu-ray movies, go with the 1080p set. It may not be that huge of a difference, but its worth it for gaming and movies. From what I have read, the 120hz sets make a big difference.

Did you want a LCD, DLP, or Plasma?

I believe Cnet said you have to have a tv over 50" to begin to tell the difference.

They've done a few articles on this subject.
