GRR!! PC SLow.. help please!

I left this AM, my PC was running fine. Tonight, it's crawling. Any ideas what could cause this and what I should check to fix it? I'm thinking of reformatting, but I dont wanna unless I Have to.

Here's some detail of what its doing. When I click an application, heck... we'll use My COmputer as an example... when I click My Computer, the hourglass comes on and it takes as much as 30-45 seconds before My Computer will come up. THen it acts frozen for another 30 secs or so before I can navigate the icons in there.

I'm running Win XP SP 2 with all updates. P 3.2, 1 GB memory, 78 gb free C drive.

I used msconfig to kill all apps running in the background, no help. I also just complete a virus scan.

just do what I'm doing right now, run a bunch of programs to see if one finds something another wont.

I've run adaware, hijack this, spybot, ccleaner, ewido, and process explorer.

My computer right now locks up randomly, and then after reboot, my cpu usage jumps to 100% for like 15 minutes before settling down. I have a disk right here to scorch the earth and load XP again, but I'd rather not. It's most likely caught some damn bug or something that hangs the restart up.

Reformatting should be a last resort, not the first option.

Go to task manager and see what process is taking up all the CPU usage.

When is the last time you've performed these maintenance tasks?

1. Cleaned browser cache
2. Cleaned registry
3. Defragged hard drive
4. Cleaned extraneous files from hard drive

I recommend that you download CrapCleaner and run it on your machine. That could be what you need: http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

CCleaner is great. I deleted 4 gigs worth of temp internet files and other crap fro my sisters PC once with it.
