    HD question

I had Direct TV come out yesterday and hook my new TV up to HD. The HD channels look phenomenal, but for some reason the channels that aren't HD look about the same as before it was hooked up to HD. Is this normal?

Also, on some of the HD channels like Spike, MTV, they have the annoying black bars on each side. I'm guessing this is the same way for everyone? If so, I hope they change it soon because its annoying. I'd rather have full screen or widescreen instead of that. Thanks for the help.

the black bars are there because they choose to broadcast that way

SD channels look bad or worse on HDTVs

the non HD channels will look just like they did before, that is normal. If any of the HD channels (SPike , Mtv) have those black bars on the side then it's not an HD broadcast. Some of those stations like that don't broadcast every single show in HD. So the bars are normal. It's not like that for every show on those channels. You can watch the regualr version and it will fill up the screen if it annoys you.

The picture is in HD but the video source is not, so it will look better than the SD channel as the resolution is higher, but that is why it does not fill up the screen. The station can choose what ratio they want to broadcast in and if you compare the 2 channels, the HD will look a lot better.

yeah, it does look better. Wonder why they choose to broadcast it like that.

You could also change the aspect ratio on your tv to get rid of the black bars. I believe zoom or fill should correct it (but Picture quality will probably suffer as this stretches and skews the picture to make it fill the screen).
