HDMI to DVI

I recently had Fios installed and had a question for the experts out there. I have a Samsung 3064W TV that's a couple years old. It only has a DVI port (no HDMI) and the Motorola DVR box only has HDMI (no DVI). The Verizon tech gave me an HDMI to DVI cable so I thought I was all set.

After he left I was playing with the settings and noticed the Video was set to 480p. I tried changing it to 720p and the video went blank. Same thing with 1080i. It only seems to work in 480p when I use the HDMI to DVI cable.

I switched to a component cable (RGB) and it works fine in 1080i.

Any ideas why I can't get 1080i to display using an HDMI to DVI cable? It worked fine on my old Comcast box which had a DVI out.

I don't mind using component cables but I have 3 components (cable, PS2 and DVD player) for only 2 component hook ups in my TV.

Do you have any other HDMI devices you can use to check the signal?

whats the model # of the cable box? Is this for Comcast ?

No, Verizon. I'll have to get the model # when I get home.

I don't have any other HDMI devices.

did some research and it appears to be a problem with Fios and Samsung TV's. So you are basically screwed. You can get some of those "Y" cables and try and connect to component devices to one of the hookups on the back of the box. It should work as long as you aren't using both devices at the same time.

Is the issue HDCP? (the fact that my TV is older so doesn't support it?)

I don't really understand it, but am looking into buying a new TV so want to make sure I get one that works.

try this first. Hook it up with the hdmi / dvi cable. Then reset the box and see if it works then.

In order to reset the box you must go into a special set-up menu not available directly from the IMG. Turning off the power or unplugging from the electrical outlet will not work. Use the following procedure to access this special menu on your Motorola DVR STB.

- Turn on TV and STB
- Turn off STB
- Hit Select on front of STB
- Hit Menu on front of STB

Nice! That worked Heel. There was a setting in that menu called HDMI/DVI Mode or something which was set to HDMI. I changed that to DVI and the picture works fine now. Thanks!
