Get rid of the black screen flash when vista goes to the secure desktop for UAC prompts - For vista ultimate, type 'secpol.msc' in the start menu search box and run it. Local Policies -> Security Options and find User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation and disable it.
For premium, start->run->type 'gpedit.msc', go to computer configuration->windows settings->security settings->local policies->security options and then find 'User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation' and disable it.
If you are on a desktop(not a notebook/laptop), change the power settings and get rid of the battery saving options. Go to the control panel and type power into the search. Click change power options. Change to high performance and then click change plan settings->change advanced power settings:
Hard disk - turn off hard disk after - change to Never (may have to type 'never' into the box. I have 2 hard drives and when pulling up files on the 2nd hard drive after the allotted turn off time, the hard drive would take 5+ seconds to pull up files at first. With this now set to never, my 2nd hard drive comes up instantly each and every time.)
Power buttons and lid - Start menu power button - setting: shut down(the button in the start menu will now shut the computer down, not put it to sleep).
Processor power management - Make sure min and max are at 100% (this should have changed automatically when you set the power plan to high performance I think).
Get rid of unneeded windows features - go to control panel and click programs, then turn windows features on or off:
You can turn off remote differential compression (unless you transfer a lot of files over a lan) and turn off tablet pc optional components(unless you are working on a tablet pc of course).
If you have a program that doesn't want to run, try right clicking on it, go to properties, compatibility tab, and then try running it in compatibility mode for xp (sp 2). You could also try running the program as administrator.
If you have a particular folder you always go to, just navigate to that folder in explorer and drag it over to the Favorite Links section on the top left. Now you can click on it in the Favorite Links section to take you right to that folder.
You can right click on vista sidebar gadgets and set their opacity.
Anyone have any other tips?

Like all new OS releases it just needs time to mature.
