PBS will be airing a documentary entitled Banished on February 19, 2008. It is about racial purging. It will focus on 3 US towns who, over 100 years ago, banished their African American population. These same communities remain virtually all white today.

Looks to be a really really good documentary and I am looking forward to it. I'd never heard of anything like this but as soon as I saw the info I was kind of surprised it never crossed my mind before that it might have happened that way in some places.
