    Macbook vs Laptop

I have a decision to make here soon about getting a laptop. I will be needing it for college, so I will be using it for typing papers, going online, and listening to music.

If you had to decide between a macbook and a laptop which way would you go? Most people I talk to at my highschool are either macbook whores or laptop whores..So its kind of hard to get a good opinion, because all they say is the other one sucks.

    Thanks for your opinion guys

Before agreeing with dagger I'll be snarky and reply that a Macbook really is a laptop....

I will say that a Mac is nice, but you do limit games and random downloads, some things are more Windows-centric. That being said, if all you're doing is what you say, I can't see why a Mac wouldn't be good.

Had a MacBook when I was in college, its great for that kind of thing. Really college students are probably its main target. Also being able to run both Mac OS X and Windows Operating Systems on the same machine with full functionality cannot be beat.

Yeah, I was leaning towards Mac..I am sick of my computer that I use at home bog down when I play music and go on multiple websites. With my experiences in Mac, I have never had things bog down.

Plus I saw a video of a macbook being used with 20 applications running at the same time (5 being video and one being music) and the thing didn't slow down.

Also how much does it cost to get the windows operating system on your MAC?
Mg- what do you mean by " you do limit random dl"?

As a recently converted apple owner I have to suggest going in the direction of a macbook. Leopard is a smoother operating system and much more stable than any version of windows.

Although, coming from windows I was lucky to have a roommate who is proficient in Leopard, and he taught me all the ins and outs of the operating system. Leopard is a significant departure from any Microsoft OS.

That's an individual computer problem, not something that only a Mac can do.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

                Re: Macbook vs Laptop

Being a guy who built his own PC (desktop), I would lean towards a PC.

I almost got a mac this past summer, but then I realized I could build a PC with far greater specs for much cheaper. So that's what I did.

The fact that you can't upgrade/customize a mac without getting a new one was a huge turn off for me.

That being said, upgrading is not really relevant when it comes to laptops.

I have to use Macs a lot at school, and I have been surprised by how many issues they have. I always hear that macs "just work," so I was really surprised to see so many freezings/crashes when I started using Macs here at school.

Ignoring desktops and focusing on laptops, I still prefer Windows b/c gaming and there are more programs that are windows-only as opposed to mac-only.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I'm not trying to sound like a PC-fanboy--just being honest. Like I said, I almost got a Mac last summer, but I built a PC instead. Mostly, I realized I was buying into the hype, so I decided to pay less and get more.

Being able to run XP on a Mac is cool, but I have no experience with it, and for me, I saw no point in getting a Mac and being on XP all the time, haha

I just mean that the downloads world, games, a lot of stuff is still more centered around Windows. I've noticed how I'll get an e-mail of "check out this free game" from a friend and not be able to run it on OSX....if you dual boot with Windows you'd be fine, just games and a lot of separate software is still more Windows based because there's just a lot more Windows boxes out there.

I have a MacBook Pro for work and it's stellar. I'm half tempted to get one of my own and dual boot, just can't justify the MBPro price....I'm still figuring out what I'm going to do. Honestly you can get a damn good PC laptop for cheaper than a MacBook, so I dunno...

I just wanted to point out the downloads stuff, if you were planning on not having Windows around at all.
