Another guy maybe worth mention is Longineu Parsons of Yellowcard. He's done some fairly impressive things for being in an "Warped Tour rock" band.

In todays world of music I'd say it is. Fast, hard, and loud is considered skill now. Not funky stuff. I'm not farmiliar with this guy but I'd say if you took him out of jazz and funk he'd not do so well just like if you took Travis Barker out of rock. I probably take Keith Moon for my drummer though. My latest project - Madden 12 http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2043231648Comment

Re: You need a drummer for your band - ?uestlove or Travis Barker?
There is little musicianship in Rock music these days. All the great musicians are either in jazz or metal, or even blues. Great musicianship doesn't get you radio plays, simple rhythms with catchy hooks does.
I listen to rock because I can relate to a lot of the lyrics, and there are some amazing vocalists out there.
I listen to metal because of the supreme musicianship.
I listen to blues because of the amount of emotion poured into it and the tone and skill level of the guitar being played.
I don't listen to jazz, but damn do I appreciate the skill level most jazz musicians are at.Comment

If you had any idea of what jazz/funk is, you would realize that they are the epitome of musicianship. Jazz is probably by far the most difficult style of music to learn to play, regardless of the instrument. As a musician myself, I have a massive appreciation for anyone who can do jazz well. And Skerik is right, technical proficiency isn't only about being the fastest. Complicated polyrhythms require far more skill than just playing cliched rock drum solos. My latest project - Madden 12 http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2043231648Comment

Mike Portnoy...I don't like the Yankees, I like the Red Sox, I don't like the Lakers, I like the Celtics, I hate the Canadiens and I love the Bruins. Soccer is the best sport on Earth, but most Americans are too ignorant to realize it. I am American.

have you ever heard the drummer for 311. Do yourself a favor and listen to Beyond The Gray Sky. But it is useless to argue about music anyway. A drummer who can play a complex rhythm is good like in jazz, but great drummers are the ones who can play simple beats and make them groove hard. Listen to Motown....the drum beats aren't overly complex...but they just groove so hard. To me...that is what makes a good drummer.Last edited by Herbsinator; 02-18-2008, 11:57 PM.Comment

On another note, I'm curious to know what you guys are using as a basis for who's better than who. The only thing that really stands out to me is the setup of the drums and the movement the guys use to hit them. Thanks for that collaboration between ?uestlove & Barker. That was pretty solid.Comment

That's because good rap is more than just reciting rhymes over samples.Listen to some of my covers:
