I know this is not the computer for everyone, and it lacks a ton of features, but it fits me PERFECTLY.
With the way I work, a laptop is absolutely essential. I'm still a graduate student in addition to working, and I want to be able to carry my laptop anywhere so that I can work on my thesis whenever I get a free moment on the road, or when my roommates are creating too many distractions at the house.
I had been using a 12in Powerbook for 5 years prior to getting this computer. I bought the PB (my first Mac) to replace an 8lb Dell, and knew that I would never want to go back to something bigger and heavier. As my previous laptop was getting long in the tooth, all I saw was the Macbook (I would never come close to needing the mobile power of a Macbook Pro), which was bigger and heavier, 5.1 lbs to my 12'' 4.6lbs (it may seem trivial, but I know from experience that every little bit counts).
When on the go, I don't need too much. Email, Internet, word processing, photos, some productivity applications. For me the trade off in power and ports(which I didn't use on my laptop anyway) was more than worth the size/weight advantage and the price premium.
I WILL say this however....it would be difficult for me to imagine the Air being someone's only computer, unless they had extremely limited and specific needs, needs even more limited than my own. I have this paired with a 24in iMac at home where I store my media library, big files, and do more processor/media intensive work. The Air is the perfect compliment to that.
Has anyone else tried/used one? Does anyone else on this board own one? I'm curious, I know the Mac fans have increased on here as compared to a couple years ago.
And I am not a blind Mac fan. I had looked at the Sony Vaio TX series for my portable needs, and although those machines had many things the Air does not, the things it added (optical drive, EVDO built-in) did not make up for the compromises it made (smaller screen, anemic processor), for the price premium.
