Question for all the OS guitarists

Hey. I have a question for all you guitarists. Do you have any recommendations for electric guitars that would be good for someone just really getting into it, who also doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg? I was looking at:

    and http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...tar?sku=519426

Looking to spend anywhere up to $300 for the guitar probably. Any recommendations on decent amps for not a lot of money? I have a 25 watt Yamaha that I got from a friend a while ago. Haven't really tried it out with my daughter's electric, so maybe it will be ok.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

The best guitar set-up for the money is a Yamaha Pacifica 112 with a small Ibanez amp. $250 set-up that plays like a Stratocaster.

I recommend checking out Ibanez. They have a variety of low priced guitars that are extremely versatile and play nicely. As for the amp, 25 watts should be fine.

P.S I just checked the links you posted. You'll be fine with either of those guitars. Both awesome for the price.

Would you ever buy a guitar you couldn't try out first? I ask because from what I read, the GRG170DX is a great guitar but they don't carry it at Guitar Center, which is where I'm going to get a guitar. They carry the RS120. Musician's Friend, which is part of Guitar Center, carries the 170 online. They don't seem to carry the Pacifica.

If you are into Gibsons, look at Epiphone's selection. They are the economy-section of Gibson guitars, and I have an Epiphone SG that is pretty nice, and I have had no problems with. It cost around 400 bucks, so that may be too much over your budget, but check them out.

            1. Never buy a guitar you can't play first. Never. Ever.

            2. If you have a used music store go there and play everything. Don't rule out pawn shops, I've found excellent guitars and amps at these places.

The Yamaha pacifica is a good recommendation. I sold guitars and amps for 7 years, and those were real good guitars for the money. Also, the Peavey's were great as well...I think it was the Predator. Not sure what the quality of either is like now, but back when I was in it, both were great for the money.

Again, don't buy a guitar you haven't played, they all differ due to many things you have no control over. I realize a lot of online music places have decent return policies, but for the $20 you save on a budget guitar, it isn't worth it. Trust me. Not to mention, any reputable music store will setup a guitar they sell you so that it plays how you like it. That alone is worth not buying from an online place.

And don't goto guitar center, that place is fulla morons. Find a real mom and pop place, they will treat you with respect.

Amp - Roland Micro Cube, it's about 120bucks but it blows away just about anything in that range. I dunno how it compares to your Yamaha though, it might be worse.

Guitar - Up to you. Agile Les Pauls get good reviews, and they are cheap as hell.

Thanks for the advice. I will take that and go to the shop. The only problem with the mom and pop thing is that up here in my small town, the mom and pop places are known to do crappy work and sell stuff for a lot more than you can get it elsewhere. People that I know, including my daughter's guitar teacher, swear by the Guitar Center in Phoenix.

Like any store, you'll have some good and some bad. Just overall, my experience with GC has been bad..every time. And most smaller "mom and pop" stores have usually been good, just depends.

Cosign. I have owned several Epiphones and they are hard to beat for the value.

If you do enough research and know what you are looking for, go to the store with the cheapest prices, try some out, and pick what you feel is the best. Don't let some teenage salesman talk down to you or anything, just do what you gotta do to find a good one, and if they are jerks, just leave and go somewhere else.

Musician's Friend is pretty good with returns, so if you would rather take the risk by going online, you might be OK, but you should double check their return policy to make sure. I buy most of my stuff (Keyboard, recording equipment, strings) from there, so I can vouch for it.

Re: Question for all the OS guitarists

I've only one guitar, but I tried out several before I bought it. I can't imagine purchasing one without having played it.

I can't really help on guitar pricing; I was advised to buy something quality by my uncle when making my first guitar purchase (who has around eight different guitars). I ended up going with a genuine Fender Stratocaster, which ran me about $800, but I love the thing.

As for amps, I've been satisfied with the Vox AD30VT. I bought it in the $200-$250 range (can't remember exactly how much), but it gives you a ton of different effects to choose from (more than I know what to do with) and a real good sound as well. Again, though, I'd try playing on something before you buy anything, as others have.

I'd steer any new player away from online tho. Someone unlike us who isn't familiar with an instrument isn't going to be comfortable working on it, etc. A store locally (even if it is GC) will be able to setup your instrument for you, something they don't do online.

I'll admit they are prolly good for the experienced player, tho I still like to give my money to a good local business.

I should also point out, many local stores will match or beat online prices (or prices from other local stores, ie Guitar Center). Don't be afraid to say to tell them you know you can get it cheaper at Store X, but would rather deal with them (especially if they are good people). I bought a Joe Pass Epiphone a couple years ago, and took the GC price into my local store and they beat the price by $20 even though it had to be ordered. So not only did I get a better price, but I got a new one, instead of one that had hung on the wall for a year.
