    Gateway Computers

    Hi Guys,

I need to purchase a new computer as mine has kicked the bucket and is really not worth the time and money anymore to fix (I am using a freinds old laptop in the interim). Anyway, have been looking at the ads in Best Buy, Circuit City and even some on-line stores like NewEgg.com and Tiger Direct.com. I noticed that there are really 3 main brands, Dell, HP and Gateway. My question is how reliable are Gateway computers now days. I realize that the parts of the computer are made by other companies , but wanted to see if anyone who has bought a Gateway desktop computer recently , experienced any problems with it.

I did see a nice Gateway gaming computer on sale at Best Buy which includes a 22" monitor for $1199.99. Looks like something in my price range but not sure about how reliable the Gateway brand is. I have never owned a Gateway computer. Hope someone could help. Thanks in advance.

    Re: Gateway Computers

I dont know, I would wait for a sale if thats the best you can find currently. My brother picked up a really nice HP gaming computer for something like 900.00 a month ago and it runs quick and ultra quiet, very nice computer.

Gateway isnt bad though, I had a Gateway once and it worked pretty well and the customer service was second to none back then (not sure how it is these days), we had the lifetime warranty on it and whenever anything went out on the computer they would overnight us the replacement free of charge. For some reason when I got my desktop I went with a cheap emachine and I certainly got what I paid for, slow and loud, thankfully I have a laptop that I use now but I would avoid emachines at all costs.

I was in your situation at the end of last year. I wound up building my own computer. It was the first time I tried to build one so I was a little apprehensive but it really was very easy to do. Only problem I had was I kept shorting out the motherboard but that was solved by loosening the screws a bit.

I was able to build a really nice computer for right around $900 after rebates and I have the peace of mind knowing that in the future it will be very easy to upgrade my computer unlike what you may encounter buying a big name brand. Plus I don't get all the annoying preloaded software you encounter with name brand computers. I can taylor everything to my need.

In short my advice would be to build your own instead of buying a name brand.

We have Gateways at my work. I can say they are good as far as reliability. To give you an idea about 10 systems (of the about 250+ we have purchased within the last 7 years) that we bought about 4 years ago have had their Maxtor hard drives go bad. Maybe 1-3 have had motherboard problems. I would not get a Systemmax pc from Tiger, I may be biased but they use Asus motherboards (which I dont like) and I have had them fail left and right (especially the onboard nics). They are made poorly also, on the last batch the doofus putting them together put the fan on incorrectly and cracked one side of the bracket so the fan is dangling and the cpu overheats and shuts down. We also have Dell Laptops, they have had hard drive failures fairly quickly (same with Micron)

picking parts and building your own is the best bet. TomsHardware.com can set you in the right direction for picking parts.

Picked up a Gateway desktop a couple of months ago. My HP went out (motherboard). Bought it on a clearance at Walmart. Upgraded the memory to two Gs and upgraded the graphics card. Have had no issues with it, runs great. Had to get used to Vista though but that wasn't as much of an issue as I had anticipated. My daughter (college age) has a Gateway laptop and loves it.

I don't think I will be building one myself as I am not that computer savy or good at building thing. Thanks for all your input guys. I may just go to Best Buy and see what they have in stock and on sale.

If it's any help, I know of two people who recently (about a month or so ago) bought Gateway computers recently in the $1000 range and they both love them and highly recommend them. They have not had the occasion to use their support so no idea how good or bad that is.
