Big L for sure. I love the DITC (except Fat Joe of course), and his soft-spoken rap pitch was pretty tight. My favorite song of his is his collabo with O.C. on "Dangerous".

I don't like Papoose's music at all really, but Philly hip-hop is one of my least favorite areas for hip-hop (nothing is worse than Dallas in my experience though).

    LA HIP HOP

    or

    PHILLY HIP HOP

I got my hands on it...not bad. You can definitely tell it's from the mid 90's though...considered old school now a days I suppose.

M've been listening to a whole lot of Papoose for the last year... got all or most of his underground stuff as well. Dude is sick.

Yeah to me Papoose is sick and that's why I brought this up, the more I listen to Pap and hear his word play it reminds me of Big L.
OK.......X*Cell U asked Philly hip hop or LA?
I say to me LA will always be rap so my vote goes to PHILLY!

Co-sign. I was never big into West Coast or Southern Hip Hop. I have a huge East Coast/ Midwest Bias. Even the consensus "great/classic" artists like Pac, Snoop, Dre, Cube, Outkast, Luda, TI, Lil' Wayne, etc. never really did much for me. Especially compared to Nas, Jay, Biggie, Rakim, G Rap, Big L, AZ, Mobb Deep, Lox, Lupe, Kanye, Em, Wu-Tang... and the list goes on and on. My favorite West/South rapper... The Game. Go figure.

my post is going to contrast so much

I love LA hip hop now-a-days as did I when 2Pac and Snoop were in the game. Today's artists I appreciate are People Under the Stairs... not many duo emcees out there that both work on beats as well. Pigeon John had a summertime classic in 2006. Murs had a gem in 2006 and Madlib produced some amazing stuff during 2007. Bishop Lamont's album with Black Milk wasn't all that special but it still has its bright spots.

Philly hip hop on the other hand is not weak by any means, it just doesn't capture my taste. I'm a huge New York hip-hop fan, and I'm also into the Massachusetts rap scene, but Philly has at best... DJ Jazzy Jeff. Even his album was imperfect and I definitely wasn't feeling Hezekiah. Papoose never had the appeal to me, and I don't pay attention to Scott Storch. I gave Freeway's album a spin and I got excited after the first three tracks. Strong!... but then it was like trainwreck on out. Can't wait til the Roots album comes out this year though.
