Where are the Monster Movies?

Like the title says, where have the monster movies gone? I mean a good 15-20 years ago, they were in abundant and now i have yet to see a big scary monster movie debut. All we get now are soft porn torture films, demonic figures (ghost etc) and cannibals. Why has this genre fallen?

Those two monster movies far surpass any of the older ones I have ever seen.

I saw Cloverfield and liked it, i was referring to horrifying monster movies though. I'll check out The Host. It just sad that torture movies have taken over the place for true monster movies. I can't wait for that Werewolf movie to come out. I think its The Wolfman

Ah, alright...I can understand that.

The Host is a great movie, though. If you go by Rotten Tomatoes, last I checked it was up near 95% or so.

The Host was really great though.

Cloverfield... not so much.

Nothing will top the cheesy Godzilla flicks. EVER. It's a shame they killed him... again.

Where have they gone? It's all been done, bro. IMO, that's why the torture-horror genre has been born.. it's something different, but equally as scary.

Whats so scary about it? Disgusting maybe but there is nothing the least bit scary about seeing people tortured.

In the four Saw movies, at least, these types of films are very thought provoking.

You could always buy/rent the old monster movies

The other night I watched an interesting cheapie Japanese monster movie where the monster was a lizard chicken. Unfortunately the monster wasn't around for much of the film.

What are examples of the monster movies you're talking about? Godzilla, Frankenstien, Werewolf, etc?

Back when those movies were made just the idea of having people dressed up in monster suits was considered "hi-tech". Nowadays, you can have the best cgi created beast imaginable and we still won't think it's realistic enough. Even Alien and Predator are long past their time.

Plus, to some degree those movies had an ounce of believability to them. That's what makes a good horror movie really. Monsters or not, somewhere in the back of your mind, you want to go to bed thinking that your phone may actually ring after watching this movie or that Freddie might get you if you fall asleep. With what we get on regular tv, video games, etc. it'd take one hell of a monster to even make pre-teens believe it could be real. I think that's why the torture movies are getting so much love. I know I personally won't be staying at a hostel any time soon.

If you can empathize with the tortured character, it's pretty damn scary, if you ask me. Problem is most of the movies in that genre don't have the most important aspect.

Movie genre popularity comes and goes with the times. Monster movies were popular during the cold war as their mass devastation and destruction was reminiscent of something like the Atom Bomb, Space movies were popular during the space race era, etc. I think today's torture porn movies are indicitive of the excess driven culture we experience in today's 21st century society.

I think they are still around but not in big budget films.

My girlfriend was telling me about this movie she saw with midget vampires that bite your ankles.
