Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
I caught the first two episodes on Sunday; thought it was pretty neat. I would prefer if it was focused on Jefferson (my favorite President/Founding Father), but It's still good with it focusing on Adams.Comment

Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
McCullough's book "1776," about the days when Washington was leading the troops — and losing battles — has also been optioned by Playtone. Kirk Ellis, the screenwriter and co-executive producer of "John Adams," said "1776" is a great companion piece to John Adams and would be an "epic war movie." He said shooting it in Virginia is "very much in everyone's mind."Comment

Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
Yeah I know what you mean. I like taking these kind of angles though. Not that John Adams is any less important than Franklin, Jefferson, etc. but it does seem like an odd choice of focus which is kind of what I like about it. Hard to explain.Comment

Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
I agree its kind of obscure to choose John Adams, but he really offered a unique point of view. He was a great patriot, but was a man of high moral character first. He would rather uphold the laws than have a new country with new laws. He believed the British system worked if people maintained their Liberty. He was really the voice of reason that kept the patriots in check. They would have turned into unorganized mobs if people like Adams hadn't existed. He really didn't promote his own agenda like most of the other Sons of Liberty did from what I have read. He basically did what was right because its right, not for his personal gain.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
great great series thus far. I cant wait to see the rest of it. Im all in.
Theyve done a great job so far in their portraying of the founding fathers imo....and the casting seems to have been very well done. They obviously put a lot into choosing the actors to play them, and all of them have done a great job so far imo. Specifically, Morse's portrayal of Washington is incredible imo.
As far as Thomas Jefferson...by all historical accounts, he wasnt big on public speaking. He was an introverted, intellectual genius obviously, but not much of an orator....However, i dont know if he was directed as much by Adams as they are showing in this series. They might be exaggerating that.
Historical accounts tend to lean slightly towards one or the other, towards either Adams or Jefferson, being that they were such enemies later in their lives (look forward to seeing that develop in this show). It will be interesting to see how they portray the relationship between those two as this series goes on. I just hope they dont go overboard towards Adams in that regard.
It is cool that Adams is finally getting some historical attention in a show like this. Being one of the main architects of independence, the 1st vice president, 2nd president, and father of the 6th president...still not many people know of him, compared to the other founding fathers.Last edited by ZB9; 03-20-2008, 03:01 AM.Comment

Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
first episode was good imo, but the second episode was one of the best episodes ever on television.
as far as the first episode, i had one very tiny nitpick with it. His son, John Quincy Adams, would have been only 3 or 4 years old during the "Boston Massacre"...but in this show, John Quincy is around 8 or 9 during that time. However, he would have been around 8 or 9 during the "battle of bunker hill", so that matched. Im sure they just liked the young actor and didnt want to have to recast for such a tiny detail. It would be impossible to get every little detail like that right unless there were 100 episodes in this series.
Anyway, this show is incredible in it's attention to detail overall imo....for some reason, there havent been enough shows about the story of American independence. The Patriot just happened to be in that time period but it wasnt very historical (btw, it's interesting that the actor that is playing ol' Bennie Frank in this series played general Cornwalis in "the Patriot", talk about opposite characters lol)Last edited by ZB9; 03-19-2008, 03:57 PM.Comment

Re: John Adams: HBO Miniseries
I've seen most of the 2 episodes and they are not bad. I think Rome was way better but the show just started so I let it run its course before I make a view point on it. Rome was great!
The part I dislike is how centralized the show is on Adams. I understand the show is about John Adams. However in an era and time like this you really can't focus on one guy, there were soo many people who contributed that when you focus on one guy it almost lessens the contributions of all the other major players.Comment
