Watch what links you click, you might get a visit from the FBI

he FBI has recently adopted a novel investigative technique: posting hyperlinks that purport to be illegal videos of minors having sex, and then raiding the homes of anyone willing to click on them.

Undercover FBI agents used this hyperlink-enticement technique, which directed Internet users to a clandestine government server, to stage armed raids of homes in Pennsylvania, New York, and Nevada last year. The supposed video files actually were gibberish and contained no illegal images.

A CNET News.com review of legal documents shows that courts have approved of this technique, even though it raises questions about entrapment, the problems of identifying who's using an open wireless connection--and whether anyone who clicks on a FBI link that contains no child pornography should be automatically subject to a dawn raid by federal police.
Our experts highlight the events shaping tomorrow.

The worst part of this is that the FBI has no idea where the link was referred from so if you get an email from someone and you click on it not knowing about the child porn thing you could still get arrested.

Well you probably shouldn't click links if you don't know what they are.

Hell, I'll make it easier than that. Don't click on links that are advertising child porn. If you do then maybe you belong in the hands of the FBI anyway.

That's not really the issue. Someone could send these links around as something that has nothing to do with child porn and the FBI wouldn't know the difference between that or someone who actually clicked on the link looking for child porn.

Ah, but wouldn't the person sending out the links have to click on said links before passing them on? So it's kinda moot.

I wonder though, what if someone from outside the US clicks those links the FBI can't exactly go after them right? (not that i'm into that sick stuff i'm just asking in terms of legalities)

They might have to click on the links or they might be able to identify them and use them. The point is it's pretty stupid for the FBI to have the ability to set up these sites and prosecute peopel but not be able to see where the the people are getting the links from.

Just a few things I didn't think of that could happen with this:
Want something really scary? The period at the end of this sentence could be child porn, which is now in your cachehomepage.mac.com

There's no way of knowing unless you check the source of every page you load
So Firefox's helpful prefetch feature will get you put in jail now?

You visit a website, it has links to another site. Firefox helpfully prefetches those sites in the background and loads them into your browser cache, so they'll load fast if you click on them.

So that website has a hidden link to a porn site (maybe someone decided to make the period in a sentence a hyperlink or something sneaky like that). Your browser prefetches the site. Now you're screwed.

                          Awesome.

Re: Watch what links you click, you might get a visit from the FBI

If someone were to circulate those links, the FBI would easily be able to see what website they came from. Of course if it was in an e-mail, that's a different matter. But I still have a hard time believing that they couldn't find it out.

But in general, I don't know how this doesn't scream entrampment. Even disregarding the Firefox prefetch feature, like mentioned, all it takes is someone to click a link on a website and it turns out to be one of the FBI fake child porn sites. Is it stupid to click on a link, not knowing what it is? Sure, but seems very ridiculous that you could get arrested.
