How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
Recently I have been listening to The Pixies Doolittle and Weezer's self-titled blue album and have been wondering to myself if The Beatles are still relevant to today's (pop) music and if they are, exactly how much? Going through the Pixies and Weezer, it seems like the majority of pop-rock bands, including indie rock bands, seem to have an apparent influence by both bands. I know a lot of bands cite The Beatles as their main push/influence and they will continue to do so, but I rarely hear an apparent influence in the actual music.
So, how relevant are the Beatles today?

Someone is in the question mood...
I still believe they are relevant. As time passes of course the releveancy will decrease, but I think they will remain an integral part of the music culture for many more years.NCAA Vets League: Arkansas Razorbacks (9-2, 6-1)

Obviously personal opinion, but I dont' find Elvis, Chuck Berry, Frankie, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Hank Williams, etc to be dull. All were pimps in the day.

you know what, I was thinking of the "English" side of the music world when I wrote that...
Basically the Beatles took a lot from those artists you mentioned. They were among the first "rockers"..Comment

Re: How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
As relevant as ever,as succeeding generations continue to discover the music.
In terms of effect on pop/rock they were the first fully self-reliant BAND,not "somebody and the somethings" or a star performer and a backing band.
The fact that they wrote their own songs and were allowed to record them from the get-go was nothing short of revolutionary.Previously, tin pan alley type writers supplied most of the songs to recording artists.
The Beatles popularized the album as an artistic entity of its' own merit.LPs had been a Xmas stocking stuffer, with 2 decent tracks and complete dreck as filler. The Beatles insisted on more quality tracks and even created the double A side single, putting 2 premium tracks on a 45 rpm record.
Even album cover art was changed as the Beatles themselves began choosing the look of each album.
Obviously, the recording methods pioneered by the Beatles(multi-tracking,tape manipulation, etc.) permanently changed the possibilities available to artists, and greatly expanded the range of sound on recorded music.
All of the above made a lot of modern rock a possibility in the first place.PS3/PS4 BradCompanyComment

Re: How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
You know its funny, not many people my age (around 20) even realize that they really like the Beatles.
I was talking with a few friends a couple months ago about DJ Danger Mouse's "Grey Album" (mixing of Beatles' White Album and Jay-Z's Black Album). Two of my friends said "ya, I dont like the Beatles." Another friend wasn't really one way or the other in terms of an opinion. (I actually got pissed off at the two friends who said they didn't like the Beatles. I called them attention whores because I felt like the only people who couldn't like the Beatles are those who want the attention of saying "I dont like the Beatles.")
So that night I played some Beatles music for the friend who was indifferenet. "THAT'S the Beatles?" he'd say, surprised how many good, noticable songs they had done.
Then, a few weeks later, I heard one of the kids who claimed he didn't like the Beatles listening to the Beatles. He still listens to them every once in a while. "Who is that you're listening to, Mike?" I always ask, knowing the answer. "Shut Up!" he says.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? Re: How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
They will always be relevant because of their recording ideas, which, aside from the Sgt. Pepper's "singles shouldn't be on LPs" mistake, are acepted today as being the norm.As relevant as ever,as succeeding generations continue to discover the music.

Musically, I think they are still influential but not as directly as they once were. There will always be bands out there looking to make the perfect pop album, The Beatles perfected that art on "Revolver" and the entire world has been attempting to make something as good since. But as time goes on, kids don't listen to The Beatles anymore, they started listening to 90s alt-rock/grunge which is why the world has Nickleback/Staind/that's all of the popular bands i know of, but they all sound about the same.
The Beatles will always be relevant because they were, in a lot of ways, the first real rock band to become a huge success, and any band who releases an LP today or anytime in the future owes something to them for the trends they started. Musically speaking, there will also always be people inspired by The Beatles' music, but it is becoming very rare to hear any of these bands on the radio. If you dig a little futher there are still a bunch of bands trying to make great pop albums('pop' in the sense of being catchy), but they aren't going to sell a million records that way.Comment

Re: How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
The Beatles will go down just like Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, etc. Their music will live forever. Each generation will continue to discover them...starting with the pop songs of 1964-1966 and graduate into the more complex 1967-1970 period. It's impossible to ignore. They were just "that good." And they changed not only the sound of music forever, but the clothing and styles of the day. These guys did it all.
My 2 kids started singing Beatle songs almost as soon as they could talk. And both (19 and 14) are still heavily into them today. The catalogue is huge...there is something for everyone.
Don't llike the innocent, toe-tapping pop stuff like She Loves You, All My Loving, Can't Buy Me Love, Help, Paperback Writer? Then delve into Pepper, Mystery Tour (Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields), Yellow Submarine (Hey Bulldog, Only a Northern Song, All Too Much), or the White Album (double album). Lastly, can any band ever top Abbey Road as an album...nevermind that it was their last one as well!! Let It Be was released after Abbey Road but Abbey Road was recorded last.
Bottom line - the music and influence will live forever. Go into the stores today...the CDs/albums are STILL selling for full retail price 40 years later!!! Incredible...

Re: How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
Yep, the Beatles will be relevant for as long as music is around.
I'm not a Beatles fan really, although I mostly listen to classic rock type music (most the Grateful Dead, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Dylan), but you have to respect what they did at the time.
They dominated different styles of music, from pop to the more alternative phydellic type rock. Listen to the White Album & try and argue that it wasn't a masterpiece.
One of my favorite present day songs was a cover of All the Loney People that Talib Kweli did.Last edited by RoyceBrown; 03-21-2008, 10:30 AM.Comment

Re: How Relevant Are The Beatles Today?
I guess a more "accurate" question would have been to ask how apparent is their influence today, rather than if they were still relevant because as I think about this more and more, it seems like the Beatles influence has become so intertwined with music and production, that their techniques and styles are the basis of many modern day genres and production techniques.
As for The White Album, I really can't listen to it much, especially when there is Abbey Road and Revolver sitting next to it. I know a lot of people like it for its variety, but the songs aren't consistent enough for me to classify that as a great album in my book.

Yep, because song about a Yellow submarine and I'm the Walrus are great writing.
I kid, I like them. I was tripping the other day, because one of these trivia question had the Beatles and Green day is the same sentence I laugh when I read that. Sure I like Green day, but that is my friends band, so I'm bias. lol The Beatles will always be timeless. I love their music.
