    In need of HDTV advice...

I purchased a 42" LG DLP rear-projection HDTV from Circuit City in November 2004 and have always been pleased with the picture. However, the maintenance of these TVs is unreal. Dust continuously gets into the set, causing small dark spots on the screen due to the use of mirrors to produce the picture. I purchased the CC Advantage extended warranty which provided free service & cleanings, but it was such a pain to schedule them that I eventually learned to do it myself with similar results.

However, things started to go south a few months ago, right around three years of age for the TV, as the lamp needed to be replaced. Not a big deal, except the model is no longer in production, so it took a while to find a replacement. While the tech was installing the lamp, he said that the engine (the 'guts' of the TV) was also likely on its last legs as there was discoloration along the periphery of the screen and general decreased picture quality/sharpness. It took about six weeks to locate a new engine, only to have it not be compatible with my TV when installation was attempted (this was in January).

I heard nothing from CC or the contracted servicer (my wife called once in February) over the past two months. Finally, she called again Thursday and must have gave it to them pretty good. CC told her that an engine cannot be found and that we will get a new TV! They're supposed to call me in 5-7 business days to provide further details, but my wife said they told her we will be able to go to the store to choose a new one. I'm assuming/hoping that they will give us full store credit for our original purchase price, which was around $2300 or $2400 I believe.

Herein lies my dilemma, as I'm not sure what type of TV I should go for. I think I'm done with DLP/RPs, as I don't want to deal with the upkeep. Plasma will probably be too pricey, unless I downgrade size or quality. That leaves LCD, which I hear has made tremendous strides in quality since I originally researched HDTVs a few years ago.

My main concern with LCDs is the dreaded 'motion blur' problem. I checked out the CC website and it appears we could get a pretty high quality LCD if they give us full credit, but I'm still worried, as I NEVER noticed any blurring with my old set. Is MB just hype? Or is it relegated to lower-quality TVs? The ones I was looking at online have response times of 5 Ms and frame rates of 60 Hz, I believe. According to the CC glossary, anything below 8 Ms should significantly reduce blurring. However, it seems that 120 Hz is top-shelf for frame rate. I watch a ton of sports, so this is a real concern for me...

Any help, advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance,

Well, I just did a bunch of review reading and some more searching. I'd like to stay at 42" due to the size/set-up of our living room, so these look like the front-runners:

    Sharp AQUOS 42" LCD HDTV

    LG 42" LCD HDTV

Samsung 46" Series 5 LCD HDTV

Any thoughts? The AQUOS has the lowest respnnse time of any I saw at 4 Ms, but it does not list the frame rate...

From what I'VE heard? sharps are not good for gaming but goosd for movies.

try a lg at 5ms and you might like it if gamings your thing, 100 less than a samsung usually but this years models are real close in quality i would gather .

I would go with this... More bang for the buck. I've owned the 32' version of this TV for over a year & love-it

Re: In need of HDTV advice...

Thanks for the suggestions. My wife and I went to CC today to see a few of the ones I found online. The LG wasn't in yet as its a new model. The Sharp was not impressive at all as the picture looked washed out. I messed with the picture settings but could not get it to look as good as others around it. Very disappointing as the reviews were almost all good...

The Samsung that I added to the list in my second post really stood out to us. It was directly next to the Sharp and blew it out of the water. I went into the menus and messed with the picture settings and it still looked very good. I really wish that they had the LG so I could have compared the two.

The bad news is that customer service said that we will be offered a TV of "comparable value" to our current one. He was unable to elaborate, saying that I just have to wait until they call and give us our claim information. But it sure sounds like they're going to to lowball us, as he made sure to say "if you're not happy with the comparable TV and are looking to get into something better, you can just pay the difference"... Unbelievable, my TV was 'something better' when I bought it, now they are going to act like a bought a cheap TV and offer me a piece of crap in return. Hopefully I'm just overreacting, but we'll know for sure in a few days (I hope, CC has never been fast with us).

            Thanks again

Re: In need of HDTV advice...

CC offered us a 50" Sony LCD projection HDTV or the value of it ($1499) towards another TV. After a lot of discussion with a cool red-shirted sales guy (the black shirts are managers and they won't give you a straight answer in my experience) about the merits of the different technologies and what he would do if he had the $1500 credit, we finally made a decision:

Panasonic 42" VIERA 1080p Plasma HDTV

We had to spend an extra $100 and buy a new 5-year warranty for $500. Our final total was $642 with tax, as we were able to get them to waive the $70 delivery fee. It should be here this Saturday and I can't wait to see it in my house as it sure looked great in the store.

Thanks to those who offered their input and I'm off to buy some HDMI cables...

              ***UPDATE***

OK, looks like I have more questions now. First, I'm going to buy a cheap one off of monoprice.com for my cable box connection, but will any of the 28AWG cables on this page work (only need a few feet)? The TV I'm getting is HDMI version 1.3; these cables all say 1.3a, but I'm guessing that they're functionally the same...

How about for the XBox 360? Do you have to get the Microsoft (or equivalent) made specifically for the 360? I got my 360 in April of 2005, so I'm guessing it might not even have an HDMI port. Guess I could just get off my duff and check, but that would require me to move it around. Last time I did that (to dust under & around it of all things) I was greeting with the RROD the next time I turned it on. Luckily, I unplugged it for 30 seconds and it has been fine ever since. Maybe I'll try to find my owner's manual...

              Thanks again
