Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher

My wife's a middle school teacher, so stories like this scare the crap out of me.

I lean left on a lot of issues, but I think corporal punishment in schools needs to come back. You'd see a lot less behavior problems if kids faced real consequences from their actions. The schools would need some kind of legal release from the parents to do so, and with our litigious society, I doubt that would happen.

Ultimately, it comes down to the parents. Unfortunately, too many parents are either too busy working, doing drugs, watching TV, or playing video games (of course no one on OS) to actually be parents to their kids.

Your solution to violent third graders is child abuse? If there was corporal punishment, I would have got my *** beat in school.

3rd graders would be nothing. Even with knives, they'd have to get close enough to you to get you without you knocking it away. But this is crazy. Kids are nuts.

I am pretty sure the Supreme Court upheld corporal punishment in public schools in a case stemming out of North Carolina. At least that is what I remember learning in Representing Children. That being said, Education Law is an area more or less left to the states with the Supreme Court only really stepping in for First Amendment issues. I know at the very least in Massachusetts so long as you don't do it out of anger it is legal to spank your child with a belt.

              All of them.

Fun fact: I found/brought some sex phone-line cards to school as a first grader.

My friends and I thought one of the chicks posing on the cards was Pamela Anderson. It wasn't.

They still haven't given those cards back yet.

28 is not old but i'm now officially putting myself in that class. Kids today are just friggin nuts. I know those conservative Christian Coalition types overdo things but I think they got it right when they say that the family unit has crumbled. There's no other way to explain this madness.

If the parents would pop up in the class sparingly on any given day to let the kids all know that they are watching them and mean business, then they would straighten up fast, but sadly they probably don't get that kind of attention at home.

There are either a bunch of terrible parents here or one terrible teacher for nine kids in one class to want to hurt the teacher.

Oh good god, spanking is not child abuse. Thats the damn problem with parents these days. They are so afraid to spank their kids. Oh lets put them in timeout. Hell the majority of kids, even 3rd graders, have cell phones and video games amongst some of the many amenities in their own rooms. So timeout is not doing any good.

Florida still has corporal punishment in school if the parent signs a waiver.
