I teach 3rd grade. The solution isn't teachers being able to hit kids. That would be such a headache. The solution is parents ****ing parenting. I know, it's a novel concept.

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
I still say kids just need to get their *** beat these days. All this "Go stand in the corner" or "You need a timeout" is a bunch off useless bull crap.
I had a belt to my butt a few times when I was kid AND I never ever thought about doing some of the crazy stuff kids today do.Comment

This was probably caused by one or two of the kids and the rest went along with it. Give the kid a spanking, don't beat them black and blue, but a spanking and consequences will do wonders for their behaviour.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
This brings up an interesting question.....How many 3rd graders could you defeat at once?
Now I am sure the one with the crystal paper weight was planning a sneak attack from behind the teacher so that could make things rough...But lets say they met you head on.
I think I could fend off about 10 unarmed 3rd graders. Armed ones with knives might be a different story, especially if they were organized. But I'm 6'4" and the average 3rd grader is maybe 4'6" 70 lbs? So it could get real ugly either way. I would count on the fear factor in them to take over When I choke slammed the first one to their untimely death.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
I love how the answer is always "spank your kids" or "hit your kids" and what-not.
My parents never once laid a finger on me and I never thought about doing anything like this to my teachers, and I'd say I grew up to be a pretty good, respectful kid - without being spanked at all when I was a child.
You don't need to resort to hitting your kids, I know I never will, because there are plenty of other ways to be a good parent and teach your kids.Comment

Originally posted by Denis LearyI try to bring them up the right way, not spanking them. I find that I don't have to spank them. I find that waving the gun around pretty much gets the same job done.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
i think the problem is you have these 8 year olds, and they have a mom who is 23-24 raising the kid by herself cuz she got pregnant at 15 or 16 when she was only a kid herself. the problem is a lot of parents today dont know how to be parents because they started parenting with the mindset of a teenager. and most even if they are in their 20's by now, still have a teenage mindset.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
parochial schools and other non public schools have similar problems, and prayer is usually forced upon in thos schools not optional. religion and prayer has nothing to do with these kids acting crazy. It is a lack of dicipline and a lack of fear. I work in an inner city school. these kids do whatever they want because they dont face any severe consequences. They pull the fire alarms, break the locks off the electrical panel boxes. trash the place. this is a middle school. 5th 6th 7th & 8th graders. kids ranging from 10-14. i bet none of them were read to as a kid. after meeting some of the parents i am not sure they even know how to read. Then it gets worse, the schools are afraid to suspend them because that cuts attendance. and when attendance gets cut down, they lose funding. so it costs them money to reprimand, or at least get rid of the problem students so the few that actually want to learn, because their parents actually did something right, have a chance to. SO the problem students don't get suspended, and become a distraction for everyone else. Thus the vicious circle continues and none of our students in inner city public schools are getting the education they deserve. all where a light smack and telling the kid they were wrong a few times might have actually done something. but what do i know, its not like i see this stuff every day. oh wait.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
My parents didn't believe in grounding me, didn't believe in taking my toys away, didn't believe in hitting me, etc. etc.
They knew that if I was acting up and they did something like that, it wouldn't stop me, and it would probably just make me worse, which it would have. Take something away from me and I'm going to want it more, hit me because of something and I'm not only still going to do it, but I'm going to learn to do it better so they don't catch me, or bigger to give them a reason to hit.
However, since they never did, I never acted up.Comment
