got my DVR set! It's a cool show just to see what goes on, plus they make it a little dramatic at times (guys fighting, whatever).

Makes me glad I'm not doing that sort of thing though...I respect those guys, but sitting at a desk isn't too bad compared to that lol

the greatest thing was that they had a "lobster catch" show right after this one.. needless to say - it was boring!

Sick to think they can make decent dough in only about a month's time of work..

They can make anywhere from 10k-50k each in about a months worth of work. That is just for the deckhands. Good money, but they go thru hell. I love this series and have been waiting for the new season to begin.

deadliest job in the world. Plus you are on a boat for months at a time working 20 hours a day. Just started watching the re-runs and love the show.

As someone who fished for halibut a couple summers ago, I can give some pro and cons of fishing in Alaska in general.

PROS: If you can make $ a long offseason possibly, potential for good $ in short amount of time

CONS: Long hours (15-20 hours per day, every day), not catching fish=no $, dangerous, it's a mental grind, out in the middle of nowhere, sleep deprivation, no such thing as a day off

Getting on a F/V is tough enough, but one that goes for king crab or ophelia is nearly impossible. I was fortunate enough to have a girlfriend who's dad owned and was a skipper of his own halibut boat. Usually it's pretty tough to get on a boat. But not just any boat makes you money. You have to be on one that catches fish, and catches them efficiently. Also, you have to earn the trust of not only the skipper, but also the other crew members with hard work.

All in all, it was a great experience. I don't plan on doing it again, but would if I had to. The show's great and watch it each week. It captures the experience well.
