Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
The Blue and Pinkerton albums are 2 of the best albums of the 90s imo. The rest of their stuff has been alright but just poppy for my tastes, though I have their other cds. This might be the first cd I've purchased in 2 years. My Teams:
NFL - Washington Redskins
MLB - Detroit Tigers
NBA - Detroit Pistons
NHL - Washington Capitals
NCAA - Virginia Cavaliers
NCAA - Arkansas Razorbacks
NCAA - Michigan St SpartansComment

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
I'll take a look at this when I get home next week. I hope it is like a mix of Blue and Pinkerton. I liked Island in the Sun and a couple songs from their newer cds, but overall I just don't like the new sound as much. I really liked the sound from Pinkerton (some of the songs not so much) and the Blue Album was pretty solid. Their last cd (Make Believe? That was the last I bought anyways), I liked some of the songs in the first couple, the singles really, then everything else was a major "meh".Comment

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
This has some potential. I wasn't big into their last two albums.
But the Blue Album remains one of my favorite album of all-time. One of the few I listen to every single track. On most long car trips I listen to the entire Blue Album."You can not ensure success, but you can deserve it." - John Quincy Adams

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
probably. I'm a huge Weezer fan and I like the new single.
I want to know if they're ever going to release all their other songs that never made it to the public. I heard that for the Green album alone they recorded something like 120 songs.Last edited by sportsdude; 06-01-2008, 03:09 PM.Lux y VeritasComment

I'll pick it up, but I don't think that they will ever make anything that lives up to Blue album. Thats was greatness.Comment

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
Anyone picked this up yet? I've wanted to pick this up the last few days, but just haven't been able to stop by anywhere and pick it up.
Everything I've heard sounds promising. Not quite Blue or Pinkerton, but much more like those than Green, Maladroit and Make Believe.
Pretty neat that Rivers is letting the other members each sing a song or two, though when you think Weezer, you think Rivers vocals.
Most of the songs were leaked on Youtube the last few weeks so I got to hear about 6 or 7 of the songs, but I've heard some of the bonus tracks on the deluxe version are some of the best songs. Miss Sweeny, I think it's called, has been mentioned in most reviews I've read.
Also to anyone that has it, how are the guitars? I noticed Pork and Beans was without a solo, which except for Butterfly on Pinkerton, might be a firstComment

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
Finally picked it up this weekend and was pleasantly suprised. While it's not Blue or Pinkerton (and I doubt anything ever will be again), it's IMO not too far behind. It's definitely a step in the right direction after Make Believe.
You can definitely tell that the band is coming together better and can tell that Rivers is loosening up. There are three or four songs in which he steps away and lets the others sing main vocals..it's hard to accept different vocals after 14 years of the same, but it's not too bad.
The first song "Trouble Maker" is very much classic Weezer. Good, catchy beat, mildly, tounge in cheek lyrics and a good hook. However, if you know anything about the history of the band and Rivers, the lyrics mean a lot more than what you hear on the surface.
The second song "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" is IMO probably one of their best songs ever (Say it Aint So still reigns supreme for me). It's basically a Weezer version of Bohemian Rhapsody and takes you through several different styles of music from rap to classical to du-op to classic weezer. Not every band can pull off one of these songs, but I think they did a tremendous job.
Some other highlights for me are "Dreamin", which is a classic Weezer/Beach Boys sounding track. "The Angel and the One" is just beautiful and is a song that starts soft and builds strongly over 6 minutes (Similar to Only in Dreams).
Next to "The Greatest...", "Miss Sweeney" is the best track on this CD and only appears as a bonus track on the deluxe version. Without going into too much detail, it's nothing like Weezer has ever done. The premise is genius and unique and they play it off perfectly.
The final track "King", which is sung by the bassist, is another suprise. It's an awsome song, that by reading the booklet, you find he fought to keep on the CD and was rewarded by being given the lead vocals on it.
If Blue and Pinkerton are 5 Star albums, I'd give Red a solid 4 stars. There are few songs that could be considered fluff and aren't what I hoped for 14 years into a bands career, but who knows, they may grow on me over time.
Anyone else pick it up?Comment

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
The Angel and the One is absolute beauty. One of there best songs they have made. The greatest man that ever lived is really good to. Other than that, it was a pretty average batch of songs for me. Deamin' is pretty good to.Comment

Re: Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
On the deluxe edition there are about 8 good tracks. The bad thing is that 3 of those are bonus tracks. Cuomo can still write a good song, but he saved three of the best(and the three that are defiintely the most old-school Weezer sounding) for b-sides/bonus tracks? It makes me question his ability to judge what a good song sounds like, even if it is obvious he can still write them.
It's much, much better than Make Believe, it probably lands around Maladriot in my Weezer album rankings(which would put it below Blue, Pinkerton and Green). 3 or 3.5 out of 5 stars IMO.Comment
