Although I see what you're trying to do, I wouldn't put colors in a database like this.

How so? I've based it off of a grade reporting page one of my previous professors used, and in it he had the same idea, the only color though was the font color, not the background color.

I wouldn't use colors either. There isn't enough separation between the different types of grades - bold the lines separating the columns.

Good suggestion, but again, why no colors? I think it quickly allows you to figure out where the average is and how everyone scored compared to it, but I'd be up for your suggestions.

I think the font colors would be sufficient. You want to the division to be noticeable, but you don't want it to be the primary focus of the page, distracting from everything else.
