For those who think it's "discpresptful" or that these guys are just "White Kids Who Sorta Enjoy Rap But Don't Understand It," this is the next in a long series of punk cover albums done by the same label. They already released Punk goes Metal, Punk goes Acoustic, Punk goes Pop, Punk goes 80's, and Punk goes 90's (am I missing any?). Next one will probably be Punk goes Country or Motown.

Relax. They're not trying to steal anyone's thunder. Just having a little fun. There's only 3 bands on there that I even like, but you have to admit, some of those covers are pretty damn funny.

They all have some decent stuff, but they all have some crap too. My favorites were the Starting Line cover of I'm Real, and the Atari's cover of I'll Remember You. Say Anything's cover of ODB is growing on me though...

Lol, the thing is...almost none of those tracks can be classified as Crunk. It's basically Punk Does "Music Made by Black People" which shouldn't be classified as Crunk. I know rhyming is the clever stuff to do but I think that part is kinda disrespectful.

Calling those songs Crunk would be akin to someone gathering all different types of songs done by white people and calling it all country music.

^Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Will Smith "Men In Black"?? Is this 1999?

The dude covered in chains on the cover looks like ****in Jamie Kennedy in one of those stupid white gangster movies he always does. It's as annoying to me as Ben Folds doing "Gin and Juice" with his stupid smirk. Patronizing at best.

What has happened to sense of humor?

Not many people seem to have a problem when rappers use samples of other songs/genres to make their songs. Seems like the same thing to me. I'm not a big rap fan and I don't care when they do it. I also think they went with "Punk Goes Crunk" because of the ring it has to it. "Punk Goes Rap/R&B And Some Other Stuff Like That" just doesn't work.

                    Re: Punk Goes Crunk

Well, covering a song is totally different from using a sample of another song to create something else. One is a direct appropriation and the other is using a piece of something to make something else entirely.

And yes, plenty of people do have a problem with their songs being used for samples, hence the ****load of copyright lawsuits: http://www.superswell.com/samplelaw/cases.html

Anyway, I'm not mad about it, some of the covers might indeed be funny... but to me, it smacks of the same patronizing "let's make fun of hip-hop by singing smarmy covers" schtick that Ben Folds was doing. It's just annoying to me, as someone who knows enough music history to know about this kind of thing happening with jazz back in the 20's and 30's and rock 'n roll in the 50's. Watching Pat Boone sing "Good Golly, Miss Molly" is basically the same thing.

So let's see...that also means punk is making fun of:

                      -80s music
                      -90s music
                      -Acoustic Music
                      -Pop music

etc...since the "Punk Goes..." incorporates all of them.

People seem to be very protective of rap music as a whole, compared to other genres.

The racial dynamics of this situation are lost on you, and that's okay. I won't drag this out any more. It's clear that some people are on-board with how I see this, but there's no sense opening up some big race/music discussion because of a stupid cover album.

                        Jamie Kennedy says hi.

EDIT: Heh, absolutely nothing to do with this CD... That's funny. Ah well, like I said, not worth getting into. I'm aware of the TOS, which is why I stopped it here.

And because it would be incredibly stupid to bring something that has absolutely nothing to do with this CD (being race, which is, I should remind you against OS' TOS anyway) into the topic.

Exactly. Like I said, the whole album is just a big joke, and a couple guys having fun.

Stumbleweed, this is NOTHING like what was going on back in the era of Boone, Cash, and Elvis. Back then, the music was being stolen, and no money was going back to the songwriters. Now, I guarantee that the label that has released all these cover albums has gotten permission to use every song that has been covered, and has paid the proper royalties. No one is trying to patronize anyone else. If anything, I think it's showing more respect for the simple fact that every band that I've ever been in, when we did a cover, it was because it was a song that all of us liked. Hell, if I heard someone wanting to do a cover of my old stuff, I'd be stoked!
