I won't even watch the remakes or anything that's rated PG-13 or less.

That is, assuming the original was rated R, correct?

I agree with your comments and that is why I liked it, no fancy special effects just a back to the basics horror thriller. I do not like the slick overproduced horror movies nowadays.

That's why I found it interesting. I liked that they concentrated on psychological scares over camera tricks.

Perhaps the story wasn't great, but the fact that someone tried to make a big budget bare bones horror flick made me happy.

Lol, the same can be said for "When a Stranger Calls"

I'd like to say that there's a difference (especially since it was rated PG-13), but in the end they are just two different movies as well. When a Stranger Calls was the worst horror movie remake that I have ever seen [that I can remember]. The Strangers beats it out in every way, IMO.

I'm not comparing the two films in quality, that was not the take home message of my post. A poster commended The Strangers for being unique and a big budget bare bare bones horror flick, and I used When a Stranger Calls as an example of another movie that was a "big budget bare bones horror flick" to show that doesn't make the movie any more relevant at all if the movie is atrocious. I mean neither this or The Strangers was very big budget, but the point remains that they both are bad movies with no redeeming qualities, and just because they set out to be a "psychological horror flick" that I guess is semi unique in today's horror genre doesn't mean that makes them good/relevant in any way. I used WASC to showcase the extreme of this example obviously, but I mean The Strangers was horrible as well.

Okay, that makes sense. However, I believe you (or someone else) pointed out that this movie is just like all of the other horror movies to come out this past decade, and with that I disagree. Many horror movies have recently actually pushed the PG-13 envelope, and they are the kinds that try and spook you with the trailers/commercials and leave nothing for the movie itself. Plus, they try and give you cheap scares only, and don't go for the meaty stuff.

I think that's why The Ring got me so much. Even through the trailer, the only thing I got out of it was there was a tape that would kill you in seven days. No such mention of a backstory of the cursed tape or a little girl left to die at the bottom of a well. Plus, they created their own world, atmosphere, etc. They expanded it to Rings, a prelude to The Ring Two (which I personally didn't like) and was a great expansion of how The Ring world really comes together. But these other movies are just one-timers where they're just trying to collect for the winter. I'm hoping this new movie, The Unborn, will change that a little (there's also another one coming out with Emily Browning that I want to see).

I just wonder what they'll do if they plan to make a sequel, which is probably a definite "yes." I think I made a post after first seeing the movie that this movie's only flaw was also one of it's greatest strengths, which is they didn't take risks. If they want their sequel to succeed, they must take risks this time around. I just hope that they push the right buttons.

I mean the plot (and ending) definitely lends itself to a bunch of sequels. I just see them becoming progressively worse (aka same bad quality but with even lesser known actors) and being released on video 2-3 months after they hit the theaters.

Your reasoning for enjoying the movie was applicable to another bad movie (that is more commonly accepted as being atrocous), so therefore to me I think it has to execute properly in order for things like psychological scares, bare bone feel to a Hollywood movie, etc to work. Just the fact that is has them is nice, but like When A Stranger Calls, these elements don't do anything to raise the value of the movie because they both are poor films (with WASC probably being worse).

                          No that's 2 seperate things.
Won't watch remakes at all even if they're rated R. (Well I watched Halloween but none of the of others)
Won't watch PG-13 or less if they're new ones.
