    Movie not playing as widescreen

    I have the PS3.

    I have a 42" Vizio/LCD t.v., 1080

My display settings are at AUTOMATIC in my PS3, shows 720/1080i/1080p as checked.

Some of my movies, which are 16:9 widescreen will either play in ZOOM or WIDE (my only options with my remote) mode on my t.v. It looks like the movies that are adjusted to fit the standard screen. The movies don't have the black borders that you normally see at the top and bottom of the screen.

Is there anything else I have to adjust on my PS3 that will allow for this widescreen playback?

    thanks

      Jim,

If I were sitting at home I could you the definitive answer.

Sadly I'm still stuck at work, but I can at least point you in the right direction.

Go into your crossbar in the blue ray / dvd settings.....in there there is a menu to adjust the standard dvd output format.

I went through the exact same issue, a minor tweak and you should be good to go.

Make sure your dvd wide display is set to letterbox format! Your dvd upscaler should be set to normal.

      Hope this helps!

Thanks huggerorange. Is this crossbar setting in the PS3 settings?

Okay, these settings were already set at "letterbox" and "normal".

          DVD WIDE DISPLAY Letterbox
          DVD Upscaler normal

I did see this mesage when I again clicked on "normal" on the DVD upscaler.

"when displaying video through component or D terminal connectors, DVDs and copyright protected DVDs will not be upscaled"

Like you said, you need to be hooked up through HDMI for the upscaler to work. I don't watch a lot of movies, but I thought I always had to set the upscaler to "Full Screen" or "Double Scale" for it to play full screen. However, I had to set it back to "Normal" recently when I played some Newhart DVDs because it would only stretch the screen untiil I did that.

I have one of those expensive cables where the end looks like a big USB connector. I need to go back to the red/white-red/blue/green cables?

No, the red/white-red/blue/green are component cables. The expensive cable is HDMI, which should allow the PS3 to upscale.

That's what my PS3 is hooked up with.

I can't remember, but it may give you that warning about not being able to upscale through component cable even when you're hooked up via HDMI. Its tough for me to remember, because I've used both component & HDMI. Just try using "Full Screen" for the Upscaler setting & let us know if that works. I ran into this exact problem recently when I switched from using composite cables with my old tube TV to HDMI with my new LCD TV.

I'll give that a try in a little bit. Thanks for trying to help.

Yeah, that doesn't mean anything at all. Just tried changing that setting now, and got the same warning message even though I'm hooked up through HDMI.

Glad to help. Let us know if you get it working. I could've sworn at one point I had the upscaler set to "Normal", but recently I had to switch it to "Full Screen" for widescreen movies to play correctly.

                            okay my options are

                            Off
                            double scale
                            normal
                            full screen

none of them seem to work.

Now when I try "double scale" i get a message

"when the output resolution is 720 the screen will display at normal"

I think i had said that i have display settings at AUTOMATIC which covers 720 and both 1080s.
