Wow, I re-watched several episodes of The Wire when it first hit Amazon Prime, but didn't know it got remastered in HD. Looks great.

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
Well, since Simon came from Homicide and I see that name dropped in a lot of articles about The Wire I would say Homicide: Life on the Streets might be similar.
I've also seen Hill Street Blues peppered around the net, but those two are the only ones I remember.

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
Honestly, even just throwing those out there doesn't give The Wire the justice it deserves. And that's coming from someone who grew up on Hill Street Blues and who has a cousin who wrote for Homicide (and that's also a show close to my heart being filmed in Baltimore). Simon was a writer/producer on Homicide too, btw. That really was a great show.
I think the reason it transcends pretty much everything else is how it touches on different areas. This is a pretty good quote from the wiki page...
Each season of The Wire introduces a different institution in the city of Baltimore and its relationship to law enforcement. In chronological order they are: the illegal drug trade, the seaport system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media, while continuing on characters/plots from previous seasons. It really is just hard to describe but if you're really interested, you can do some research on Simon and his history.Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals. Whether one is a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, all are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution to which they are committed."
EDIT: Completely missed you saying Simon was from Homicide, lol. Sorry for the repeat. He also has an HBO mini-series called The Corner that's great and focuses mostly on the drugs and poverty in the area. Maybe a combination of Homicide and The Corner, while touching on other areas too?Last edited by wwharton; 05-19-2015, 03:10 PM.Comment

I know those shows don't "compare", but are probably the only ones that would be close to similar to the tone The Wire goes for. Everything else is over dramatized.

Just started re-watching for the first time with the Mrs, finished S1 over the weekend. I hated S2 the first time around, looking forward to seeing if it grows on me this time."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier
