Movies and sequels:When is enough, enough?

Last night I was watching the original Halloween last night on Monster HD. It was a good movie for its time and I liked the second one also. Then they ruined it with all of the crappy sequels in between until they got to H2O. I was thinking, if they would have just made those 3, it would have made a good triology. What movies do you think overdid it with the sequels and if so, where should they have stopped? Also, what movie you think deserved a sequel?

Every sequel/prequel made after the 2nd. By that time they're just going back for the money, not telling any new stories.

So I guess RETURN OF THE JEDI was done just for money eh?

When it's a continuation of a common story, and the film has merit on it's own then it's fine. When it's being done as an excuse to make a buck, but is really either rehash of previous movies, or a really bad flick that's only being made because it is "Previously Popular and Well-Made Movie" IV, then it's time to stop.

Horror movies always seem to fall into that trap. The only non horror movie that I think really fits that mold is the Police Academy movies. It got so bad at the end that the 7th (Mission to Moscow) was direct to video!

Maybe Horror movies are the EA of the movie industry. They keep putting out the same thing and we keep paying to see them, so they keep making more.

Interesting point someone brought out about Return of the Jedi. Was that movie made for the money? Not really, it finished the Star Wars triology. But did the prequels have to be made? Perhaps they were made for the money? Of course being prequels, they didn't continue a story, tall they did were make Darth Vader a more sympathetic character.

Hopefully the new Indiana Jones movie won't fall in this thread next week.

I hope so too. I'd hate to see it pull a Rocky Balboa on us and do absolutely nothing but waste our time. Even Die Hard 4 seemed to trot through it's time just to make money.

Don't revive a well known franchise if the movie isn't going to do anything but make the star look old and make us wish we were watching the old ones instead.

As long as there's a good story I don't care how many sequels are made. For whatever reason people hate sequels in general but if a movie is good enough to make me want to see more of the character then it isn't a bad thing.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

If you know the entire backstory about the Halloween series and all the sequels, Carpenter, etc. it's actually pretty interesting and crazy.

Initially Carpenter wanted to make a new "Halloween" movie each year that would contain different mini movies in it (think Creepshow) that were horror and Halloween themed. His contract had him pegged in for two movies but he didn't want to do the sequel so Moustapha Akkad and his crew went ahead with the sequel.

After Halloween II they wanted to bring back Carpenter and his crew but he didn't want any part of it seeing as he didn't want another Myers movie. Akkad relented and that's why you saw Halloween III go in a totally different direction. After that movie bombed without Michael Myers, he was brought back and the Akkads milked every cent he could out of the character and the franchise.

Halloween really should've just been a one off movie...the premise was brilliant and it lent itself to just being a spooky movie that didn't need sequels or rhyme or reason or anything...even the ending would've been great for one movie as well. Of course, $$$ talks and that's when Michael became Laurie's brother, The Thorn was introduced, and all kinds of whacky stuff went on.
