Re: WTF? Computer problem...
I have dealt with a very similar problem. The Computer would randomly restart, and then I would get a recovered from serious error and also the something bad happen.... error also.
This went on for a while on the computer with XP and was cured with a complete system restore that accompanied some new parts. So while I can't really offer much advice when I upgraded my processor and did a restore completely of windows xp the problem went away.
I would though recommend the TechSupportForums.com site as one to help with issues, if posting that link/repping that site is against the TOS my bad, just trying to help.Comment

Windows XP has a setting that if an error occurs restart the pc. You may want to go into Safe Mode (if you can) and turn that off.
For the virus problem, I would get a BartsPE disk and get a virus program on there and do your scan booting from it.Comment

Re: WTF? Computer problem...
sounds like a virus- same thing happened to my aunts pc.
it wouldnt let us run any anti-virus programs, or install new ones to run. It tried to get us to download the programs in the virus (i think)
what happens if you press ctl alt delete??
When we did that, it said it was disabled for some strange reason.
To make a long story short- we(I) had to end up running the recovery program on the pc- which installed all the original files from scratch.Comment

If you can get around the reformat, make sure every little bit of the old virus program is deleted completely before installing a different one, or you will be awakening a whole new ugly beast that can really make things worse. I wouldn't go with a free virus program. IMO they just are not as robust as a retail version.
The new Norton Anti virus is the best program I've ever had. It is a bulldog to say the least. It has saved my butt many times since I've installed it and already has paid itself off many times over because of that. It even lets you know when something at a site or when arbitrary code is a threat and can stop it before it is too late like no other virus scan I've seen.
Besides getting all the updates for every app. on your computer, the virus scan is the best protection you can have to keep your rig up and going. BTW-I don't work for Norton or any virus scan company, just alot of experience and endless reformats in my past to learn my lesson well.Last edited by coffeeholic; 05-25-2008, 05:56 AM.ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Can a virus mess up your router too? Cant connect with the laptop I am having to use someones connection that's next door to us. Maybe a virus messed up the router? All I know I can't connect via laptop or desktop. When I try system restore it has the date of April 24th 2099 and won't allow me to do anything. iTunes will open now but I get the linksys couldn't open.exe or encountered a problem. Should I delete linksys and try to the whole process again? I think I need a new virus protection. Guess I will go out today and buy one since I can't download one. I hope it fixes the problem.Comment

Can you get that as Best Buy or should I just download? I'd rather have a hard copy on a disk though.
Also. I have AVG, do I need to erase that from my PC before I do it? On my fiance laptop she has McAfee, should we take that off before hand too? I think Norton can protect up to three PC's.Comment
