how dangerous is this: HD clean up without backup

I think that's pretty self explanatory. I'd like to know just how safe it is to do a HD clean up without performing a backup. I ask because I sadly misplaced my Windows XP disc and I want to free up some space on my HDD as I only have about 26 gigs of free space left.

Now when you say HD cleanup, what exactly do you mean? Are you going to be uninstalling programs? Deleting files?

If you can be more specific in what you want to do, I can try to help you out.

It sounds like he is doing disk cleanup but I'm not sure.

Since he has no disc he can't do a reformat.

Sorry bout that, yeah i'm talking about disk cleanup. I went ahead and did it. Man....I freed up 11+ gigs of space! It's sad how much crap I had floating around.

Disk cleanup is pretty worthless. It still leaves many things.

Get CCleaner. It's free and it a very good tool. Also after you run the cleaner, you can go ahead and scan the registry for any issues.

Thanks i'll look into that when I deem it necessary. I have enough space that i'm comfortable with right now.

Yeah, I'm tempted to get another one of those so I have more space for media and whatnot....

I got the Western Digital 250 gig external USB drive for like $90 a while back and it works great, just plug and play.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)
