Mostly a bit actor from what I remember. Wasn't he in Tootsie? Always played his part well.

yea he also acted in "Eyes Wide Shut", the final season of "the Sopranos", and "Michael Clayton".

one of the best directors of our time imo...he also produced a crapload of movies. Actually, I think he produced "Recount" that just premiered last night on HBO.

          RIP.

I was also going through his list of movies he played in and I noticed he did one episode in the Sopranos. I don't remember him in there. 2007 it says so last season.

LOL-hardly a bit actor, as many of his acting roles were a sideline from his directing. For example his part as Hoffman's agent in Tootsie earned praise but not an Oscar nod for directing the movie. He won Best Director for Out Of Africa, and was nominated for They Shoot Horses Don't They, along with Tootsie. But you're right, he always played his part well.

Unfortunately Sydney had to withdraw from directing Recount due to his illness.

He played the federal inmate that befriended Johnny Sac in the second of the last bunch of episodes. He was excellent in that role.

Man, great directors need to stop working for HBO! John Frankenheimer's last movie was PATH TO WAR which was about LBJ and Vietnam (very good movie btw) and he died shortly before the movie came out and now this happens to Pollack.

Anyways, a very good director and a versatile guy as he was able to have a pretty good sideline gig as an actor as well.

A very talented actor, director, and producer that will be missed by the entertainment industry greatly.

He was. He played a former oncologist (cancer doctor) who murdered his cheating wife, his wife's lover, his wife's mother and I think the mailman in a fit of jealous rage exacerbated by cocaine. He provided comfort to Johnny Sac with a more positive cancer diagnosis (Johnny was dying of lung cancer) than his real doctor , but eventually had to concede that doctor's more grim conclusion. "Aggression (referring to the rapid spread of cancer) always surprises me" he says to a dying Johnny Sac. Not to be morbid but that line has really stuck in my head since learning of his death.
