    The Mars Volta

What do you guys think of them? Me and a friend, who usually listen to Rap music, electronic music and dance music...and a little bit of new rock music took a leap of faith and bought 2 of The Mars Volta CDs.

The first one we listened to was "The Bedlam in Goliath". The very first track starts out with Cedric SCREAMING....we bust out laughing at how wack we thought it would be.

About 3 weeks later, The Mars Volta has become one of my favorite bands. My favorite CD by them is the first one, the one I bought, called "De-Loused In The Comatorium".

    Anybody else like them?

I used to listen to them a bit a few years ago. De-Loused is a great CD.

They just have a bit too much ambient noise for me. It's not really something I can "listen" to, but more of something in the background while chilling.

I remember listening to a few songs, and their singers voice really annoyed me. That's all I remember.

The Mars Volta is the best band out right now hands down IMO. They have 3 1/2 hour concerts and they write great songs (Omar writes the music and Cedric writes the lyrics). They have had two of the best drummers in music history in Jon Theodore and current drummer Thomas Pridgen. They mix jazz, rock, blues, latin music, progressive music and have so much energy and talent.

If you want to try them out buy Deloused in the Comatorium, that is an album that almost everyone likes even those that hate their other albums. If you like it get Amputecture next then Frances and then Bedlam. I love all their albums, but Amputecture is my favorite and I won't lie I miss Jon Theodore because I like that he played a lot like Billy Cobham, but Pridgen is so talented and will continue to develope as he has more time with the band.

If you get MTV HD look for the Mars Volta's live Nissan Set that gets played randomly, it's a good little taste of what they are live, but it's nowhere near their best live performance, still very solid though.

I experienced almost the exact same thing. I used to really listen to rap, but I heard a couple of their songs and got interested in the rest of their work. Now I have all their cd's and they're probably my favorite band now. My tastes in music have become more and more diversified since listening to them.

I really really hate them. I absolutley can not stand the singer's voice and that throws the whole thing off for me.

Bump. If I dig The Mars Volta on El-P's "Tasmanian Pain Coaster" will I dig the band's albums?

                  Used to like them.

I saw them live in which was pretty much the most pitiful performance I've ever seen. It completely turned me off, and I haven't listened to them since.

I read somewhere they record all this stuff by not playing with each other but by mapping out songs and recording everything bit by bit.

Anyway they are interesting and diverse and have a lot of originality which is hard to come by.

Strange that folks could go from rap to Mars Volta in my estimation. Rhythms seem quite contrary.

Why do people say stuff like this?

I love the band though. Great, great prog rock band.

Their keys guy frequents all the small bars here in LB. He's pretty low-key which blows my mind, seems like your everyday-dive-bar-goer.

                            Bumping this up.

I got Frances The Mute in the mail Friday - listened to it Friday night. It basically melted my mind.

Ya I got it when it released and it was great. A very nice change of pace from what I typically listen to.
