    Internet Connectivity Help

Ok so ever since i came home to college and my dreadfully slow dsl connection here at home ive been encountering a ton of problems with my internet connection. The connection says it is connected but pages will not always load and the connection seems to stutter and disconnect and reconnect all the time. A little background info , i have verizon DSL and i am connected through a linksys wireless router. The two desktops are connected through a wire and my laptop is now too because the wireless strength is very weak up in my room.

Ive called verizon they have run diagnostics checks and they say everything is fine on their side, they tell me to call linksys. I call linksys and after a 2 hour session on the phone they say its the router (which i just bought 2 weeks ago after my 3 year old router was having the same problems. They tell me to take it back to the store or to call verizon. Basically i am sick and tired of the run around and i was just wondering if any comp savy guys on here could offer any suggestions to help me out.

I need a strong connection so i can join some online dynasties this summer, with the way my connection is right now i cant stay connected to the psn. Thank you in advance for your help guys and if you need to know anything else let me know and ill tell you all that i can.

Do the two desktops that are wired to the router have the same problem?

The few times i have been on they do have the same problem but they occur much less frequently.

Also i just asked my sister and she said that the same problem is occurring with the desktop she is on.

It sounds like it probably is the router. Have you tried turning the power off on it and turning it back on?

Yeah did that to the router and the modem when i called verizon and linksys...i just bought the router is there really a chance something is wrong with it already because thats what the guy from linksys said but it sounded like some bs thing he was saying after being on the phone with me for 2 hours.

Ummm... If you were on tech support for 2 hours, and the dude actually told you to return the router due to it being faulty, why in the hell would you not believe him?

Mainly because i know its not the router because it was happening with my old router and i went out and got a new one only to have the same problem occur with the new router. It seems to me to either be a problem with my internet connection or i dont have something set up right in my router settings i was wondering if anyone here could give some suggestions on what to do because the last thing i want to do is deal with the morons that work the verizon and linksys tech support.

If both routers are doing the same thing it's probably something with the modem or the line. I would connect directly into the modem and bypass the router and see if you still have the same problem. If you do then it's definitely either the modem or the line.

Yeah we've tried that and the same thing....what would you recommend i do i think the only thing i can do is call verizon and ask them to send someone out here to fix the line and or modem right?

                    Re: Internet Connectivity Help

Ok so they sent a guy out here after being on the phone with them for another hour and one new modem and one new phone jack later and i am still having the same problem...sorta. What happens now is that when the internet works pages will load faster and will work flawlessly. However i am still having these brief periods of drops or time outs where if i am connected to anything such as the PSN or AIM it will have to continually reconnect. I have no idea what else i can possibly do i have called verizion and linksys multiple times. I have connected my computer directly into the modem and i still experience the same thing. But i just got a new modem and the line has just been fixed by verizon. If anyone has any ideas on what i can do , who i can call, what i should say i would greatly appreciate it because i am going nuts over here with this internet thing.

You may need to have certain ports open for the PS3, that could be causing the disconnects. however for AIM I'm not really sure. One thing you can do is go to Start, then run, then type in cmd and hit enter. A dos window will open up, type ping www.yahoo.com -t and hit enter. This will start a ping to yahoo's server. When you lose connectivity to yahoo then ping will also stop and say request timed out. This means you are losing your internet connectivity.

Yeah the linksys dude made me do the ping thing with yahoo. I still get the request timed out when i do run this. So it still a problem with verizon then right?

Tell them that you periodically lose internet connectivity and you verified this by pinging yahoo's site. They will also want you to verify that you did this directly connected to the modem bypassing your router. Then they will probably say that there is something wrong with your PC. I would tell them you have used multiple PC/laptops and the same problem occurs.
