Techno in bed with R&B

How do you feel about this mix of genres becoming popular?

Three examples off the top of my head:

Janet Jackson - Rock With U
Ne-Yo - Closer
Rihanna - Please Don't Stop The Music

Timbaland/Danja are probably the two most popular Hip-Hop producers that are making money with this fusion. Well, they are two of the guys I can think of right off the bat that have produced a few tracks with techno themes.


Personally, I think it's a nice fresh look at R&B. It's always been my belief that while Rap is getting worse, R&B finds a way to remain fresh by incorporating new elements. This is R&B's new fresh element.

This is nothing new. R&B has always been a very inclusive genre of music. We've seen blues, jazz, funk, hip hop, disco, gospel and now techno being huge elements of the sound. To me, this is what makes R&B a far more fresh and interesting genre then most as about every decade or so something new (or old, such was the case in the mid 80s when the Motown sound became insanely popular again) comes along and merges with the current flavour of R&B. It's an ever evolving genre that remains as fresh today as it was in the late 50s when it emerged from its blues oriented roots.

I don't know if you can call it techno, though. I mean, Timbaland/Danja might have a unique sound but it still sounds nothing like techno to me. But then again that's just my imo.

A bit off topic, maybe... but remember when early 90's dance music (house --> eurodance) incorporated rap in the middle of the songs? Stuff like Real McCoy and 2 Unlimited? Man I thought that was the coolest stuff back then but now when I listen to them I can't help but laugh at the lyrics!

I considered saying House was in bed with R&B but decided against it since I thought more people were aware of Techno music while House still remains a confusing genre for most.

House is the better term in relation to the music we're hearing so I agree.

Someone else could probably explain better but techno is mostly synthesized while House is normally different for it's inclusion of a drum machine kick.

I understand but the production is still different. They may be singing pop but their form of pop is very r&bish. And the music production has strong house elements. The continuous, repeated drum line and heavy use of synthesizers is house. The rest, such as the composition, samples being used, and background are R&B-like.

What makes them pop is the vocals, lyrics. There is a significant difference between Furtado's Man Eater and I'm Like A Bird, Madonna's 4 Minutes and Take A Bow, or even Britney Spears' Gimme and Oops! I Did It Again.

Their styles have changed because of the music production.

This is the new thing. Mixing in those elements.

I'm not saying that it's heavy, heavy techno, house, electronica, acid, whatever. I'm just saying that the basic, most recognized elements of that music is making a strong emphasis on R&B music.

Chris Brown, by the way, refers to himself as a pop artist. I wonder if BET got the memo.

It's not techno or house. That's an insult to both types of music.
