HDTV Gurus..I need your help!

Okay so I had a Samsung 50 inch DLP HDTV (the 720, not the 1080).. of course they dont make it anymore. It finally died and past warranty so I said f-it and I picked up this TV today:

So I get it home.. fire it up..

reg tv chanells, check
HDTV chanells, check (look amzing)
360 (through component cables) , check
PS3 (through HDMI), NEGATIVE!!!

Right nowt he PS3 is the only HDMI thing running into my new tv. I fired it up and there are green horizontal staticy looking lines wiggling on the screen. I tried this on all 3 HDMI ports, same thing. So I take the PS3 into the bedroom where I have a 32 inch samsung LCD HDTV with a couple of HDMI ports. Jack it in, it works fine. So I dont think its the PS3.. Im still not sure if its the TV or the actual HDMI cable I bought back in the day for the PS3. Are all HDMI cables created equally? My next step before swapping out the TV is to go buy a more expensive HDMI cable (ive had my ps3 for almost 2 yrs now and the HDMI cable too). This TV is my first true 1080p capable TV.

Have any of you ever heard of something like this via HDMI hookups? Im hoping I just need a more sophisticated cable or something (but like I said, it worked just find on my old 32 inch samsung lcd tv). I tried jacking with the video settings in the PS3 as well but that didnt work.

You can try swapping the HDMI cable from your bedroom into your new TV. Another thing you might try before that is to reset your settings on your PS3. To do this, turn on your power to your PS3 (the switch in back of the system). Next, hold down the power button on the front of the system for a few seconds. You should hear a series of beeps. After the beeps you can let go. Try that and see if you get a picture.

Update on this. Fortunately my HDTV cable box has jacks for component AND HDMI. I took the HDMI cable from the back of the PS3 and put it in the back of my HD cable box and the HDMI works... so is there something Im not doing right with my PS3? Is my PS3 messed up?

Okay I did that and I dont have the jaggy green lines anymore. It said it detected I was using HDMI but it defaulted my PS3 to 480p. Im trying to get it to 1080 or even 720 and its not doing it on the PS3. I have a big clunky menu on screen now (

Okay another update. I got the PS3 to push out to 1080 on the menu and it did, but now Im getting those scrazy green broken horizontal lines moving all over the place on the screen. The PS3 went to 1080 but the lines are back. Im using some HDMI cable that I bought the day I bought my ps3. This is driving me insane.

If you've got your PS3 set to output at 1080p that should be it. If that is the case, I'd just take the Sammy back and get another. Shouldn't be having that type of problem out the box.

But see I dont think its the TV... because... I hooked up that same HDMI cable to my HD Cable box and its dispalying HDMI just fine.. i hook it up to the PS3 and i get all that crap on my screen. My 360 (via component cables) work just fine as well. Im going to get some component cables for my PS3 and see what happens. Im like 85% sure its something with my PS3 and 15% sure its the TV. Ive read where other people have HDMI issues with thier PS3 and a thier samsung TV's.

but like i said, displaying my actual tv stations through my HD Box via HDMI today displayed a perfect picture.. its only acting up with the PS3. I want to cry.. that ****er is big and I dont feel like moving it down 3 flights of stairs. I wish I had one more HDMI compatible device in the house like a true HD or Blu ray dvd player so i could hook that up via HDMI to the tv and see what happens. Right now the only two things that can be hooked up to my TV via HDMI is ths PS3 and the Cable Box.. Cable Box is fine, PS3 isnt .. but if i set the PS3 to 480, there is no crazy stuff on the TV with an HDMI hook up.

Unplug the PS3 entirely,and let it sit for a few minutes;with the HDMI cable connected,turn it back on and re-initialize or reset the video output settings.It sounds like an HDMI handshake issue.You've eliminated the HDMI cable as the culprit,and the TV as well.
There does seem to be some history of Samsung sets and PS3 HDMI issues;some people have changed HDMI cables with some success,others have run the HDMI through a A/V receiver,then to the TV.

Thanks, Im going to test these things out when I get home today for lunch. If it truly is just a handshake issue with the PS3 and the TV but the PS3 works with component I wouldnt be too upset about running it off of component (my 360 has been). Im gonna get a new HDMI cable and the PS3 component cables from best buy today to test this out. I will keep you all posted. I want to play MGS4 SOOOOOO BAD!! and Im missing my The Show

Change your PS3 to output 1080i, not 1080p. The native resolution of the TV is 1080p but that doesn't mean it can accept 1080p as an input. This would explain why you other devices work since they don't output at 1080p.

So I went to best buy (there is one literally I could walk to from my place) bought a new HDMI cable for 64.00 hooked it up. POW! everything works now.. well so far. I did the PS3 reset thing and it gave the whole "PS3 has detected an HDMI connection do you wish to use this?" I hit yes.. then it went to the "do you want the PS3 to automatically use the optimal setting" I hit yes.. and POW there it is in full 1080p glory, no crazy green crap flickering all over the screen. The cable i was using before is that one in the white packaging at Best Buy over in the PS3 section for 99.99, I got a cheaper one and this one works, however the 99.99 one Im not gonna trash becuase it actually works with my cable box. So I guess now I can take out my component connection with my cable box with frees up my 2nd component now and I can go buy me a Wii. Thanks everyone for listening. I was stressing. You know when you work m-f and youre weekends are your free time you dont wanna spend the weekend jacking with stuff, you want to ENJOY it lol. The story of my life is something always messes up on Sunday and I end up blowing the whole day jacking with it, stressing, etc.

Watch.. Ill come back home from work later to find out something else is wrong LOL As far as the TV goes, it was money well spent. I love it. I probably could have done ok with the 46 instead of the 52, but fugg it.. I was being a greedy bastard and I was emotional when I made the purchase.. kinda like chicks that go shopping when thier BF dumps them lol

Seriously, HDMI cables FOR THE MOST PART are the same...it's not like the component cables where thickness can matter (so to speak). There is negligible differences in quality between the $5 cable and the $100 cable. You are basically paying for the packaging. Take it back, get "raped" by Worst Buys restocking fee and then order the $7 joint by the above mentioned web site...it'll be worth the money saved...1

All I know is the cable I bought when I got my PS3 almost 2 years go doesnt want to act right with my new TV. The cable I just bought did. I really dont feel like ordering a cable, waiting for it, it not working possibly, etc etc. THe cable I just picked up regardless of the price solved my problem and thats all I really care about at this point. Sure HDMI cables are probably the same when it comes to looking at picture and sound quality but all I know is I have two HDMI cables now in front of me. One didnt work right with the new TV and one does.
