Technology - More talk, less communication?

Has anyone who is older noticed that as technology increases the ways that we can all talk that it seems like people have less to really say in the way of true communication? For instance, I have some family members who used to be offline but finally got them online and instead of us all communicating about how we're doing, how our lives are going, etc etc all I get are these stupid jokes and forwarded stuff like that. I also get the same thing from old high school friends.

Does anyone really use technology to really say anything or is there just a lot of jibber-jabber with no real content? It seems to me that maybe the more people are connected the more you realize how truly vapid and empty most people are in regards to having anything to say. I dunno, maybe people just can't write worth a damn or something but it just seems like with all these tools at our disposal we could all get to know each other a little better instead of sending funny pictures of cats to each other.

There arent too many things that are worse than the family member that discovers the internet and gets your e-mail.
