    HD Converter boxes

My friend doesn't want to pay $15 or so dollars a month to rent a HD converter box from the cable company. He wants to own the HD box and then get the service from the cable company. I have looked everywhere but could not find a place to buy one.

So, does anyone have any info on where I could buy one at?

    Thanks

Has he been renting one or does he think you need an HD box because of this going digital thing? A normal DVR would work if they charge more for an HD box

He has an HD bigscreen but doesn't want to rent out the Hd box from the cable company. He would rather just buy one

You mean he wants to buy a HD box to receive cable on? I'm sure the cable company would gladly have him pay $500+ for one. If he just wants to get OTA HD signal, buy an antenna and hook it up.

i work at a cable company, and its not worth it to buy one.
Renting is the way to go- you can always switch out an old HD box fo a new one if you rent. And the boxes are updated with often with new features.

He feels like he would be throwing his money away by renting the box for a real long time and not actually own the product in the end.

He will have to rent the same box for years 5+ to match what he would pay for the box new.

Perhaps, but cable companies don't offer boxes for you to buy...I know there's some Cable Card technology, but you're still paying a monthly fee, you're not going to escape paying a fee if you want cable....

Assuming you/he are looking for more than a simple over the air hd box to get the hd locals...Cable co will not sell it to you, or I should say mine (charter) will not under any circumstances sell one and I'd guess most cable cos will be like that. Buying one off ebay will not help because the cable co. will have to provision it into the system and I doubt they would unless you/he can pull some major strings.

You may want to have him look into a series 3 tivo...but you'll be renting cable cards from the cable co. and paying tivo a service fee so that probably isn't any better.

Unless he is satisfied with just over the air HD local channels, he is stuck paying someone a monthly fee somewhere for HD channels.
