I don't like the Yankees, I like the Red Sox, I don't like the Lakers, I like the Celtics, I hate the Canadiens and I love the Bruins. Soccer is the best sport on Earth, but most Americans are too ignorant to realize it. I am American.

The Simpsons by a very large margin as the best Comedy ever.

M*A*S*H deserves its props as well, but predates most of OS's TV viewing lifetimes.

If we're going by "Best" and not "favorite" (as it seems like it is turning into), M*A*S*H and Cheers definitely need to be up there as the "Best." I just didn't like them - I've seen most of the episodes on DVD, as they're my dad's two favorite shows - so there no where near the top of my favorite lists.

I will have to say The Wire. Hands down for me.

Until season 4 I would've said The Sopranos. But from season 4 on that show just died to me.

Honorable Mentions: Boy Meets World, Lost, Scrubs.

I maintain that anyone who has not mentioned The Wire has simply not seen the show.

Then again, most people here probably maintain that I am probably an idiot.

My favorite television series are (in order) The Wire, Gilmore Girls, and The Shield. Those are the only shows I liked enough to buy the complete series of. I don't watch old shows because I don't like them (aside from Wonder Years, but it's not that old). For the most part though, I can pretty much watch anything that's on TV. I'm rarely picky.

Miami Vice is 2nd, at least in my book. Very cutting edge and controversial for that time period of '84-'88. Remains one of my all-time favorites. Obviously not a best series of all time for lasting only 4 years.
You should really check out "Fastlane" (on DVD July 8th, lol). Some people say it was a 2K Miami Vice.

Plot: Van Ray (Peter Facinelli) and Deaqon Hayes (Bill Bellamy) are two mismatched cops teamed together by shady vixen police lieutenant, Wilhelmina "Billie" Chambers (Tiffani Amber Thiessen), in a secretive undercover division of the LAPD. Operating with the motto "Everything we seize, we keep. Everything we keep, we use," their base of operations is the "Candy Store" - a warehouse containing a fortune in confiscated cars, clothes, weapons and everything else needed to blend into the seedy criminal underworld of Los Angeles. Given criminal covers, the officers use all of the resources at their disposal to apprehend dangerous miscreants while walking the line between cop and criminal.

Each episode cost the two studios making it (Warner Bros. and Fox) [$2.6 million. The show's hallmarks — unconventional cinematography, explosions, guest appearances, licensed soundtracks, supercars and other exotic vehicles — were the root cause of the exorbitant production costs. As a result, the show was canceled because of these high production costs and the ratings drop it suffered from being moved from Wednesday nights to Friday nights.

The series paid numerous homages to the original Miami Vice, of which it was a spiritual successor. Watching the first aired episode of each series reveals numerous similarities in plot and music, in addition to the obvious similarities in premise and ambiance.

I'll be the first to support your theory. I've never seen the show.

Cool. I'll check it out. I remember seeing it promoted. Had no idea it was that type of show.
