Help! Best Place to Sell Used CDs?

    Here is my situation:

I have around 300-400 cds that I never play because I have a mp3 player that has all my music and I use that exclusively. So my Cds are just collecting dust and I decided its time to sell them. I have 3 options:

    1) CD Warehouse: The pros are there are no shipping charges because there is a store around the corner. The cons are they are extremely low when it comes to prices. Sometimes buying CDs for 2-3 dollars less than online stores.

    2) Secondspin.com: They buy at the highest prices and have the best online setup but I read one online review where they didnt accept half of the guys cds because of scratches and refused to send them back until he paid for shipping. Also you have to pay to ship them.

    3) Spun.com: Prices arent as good as Second Spin and they arent buying alot of my cds but they pay for shipping.

Anyone have any thoughts or other stores that buy CDs? Thanks.

I was thinking of doing the same thing just a few days ago. I don't listen to any of my cd's anymore and I have everything on my 2 HDD's. I was thinking of also getting a 2nd external drive to mirror for backup and just selling off my cd's.

Personally, if you have an FYE around, they tend to give a good amount on CD's that can range from $3-$5 each depending on what it is.

You could always be charitable and donate the CDs to a goodwill store. "shrug"

I'd look around for a more independent used CD/Record store...they'd probably treat you pretty well.

Thats a good idea but I dont know if a goodwill/charitable store wants to sell Too Short, Nas and Dr. Dre cds.

Screw Goodwill, if you want to actually donate them then give them to Salvation Army, Goodwill is nothing more then a business trying to make money by exploiting the less fortunate and homeless.

Yes they are a business that tries to make a profit... which they then use to help those less fortunate and homeless that you speak of

Out of your options, I'd go with #1.

The time saved would be worth the 2 or 3 dollars less, in my opinion.

In my experience, selling used CDs online is a crap shoot. For one, you get absolutely nothing for used CDs. Another thing I would hate to ship 300-400 CDs.

If the brick & mortar store will take them, I would unload them there. Chances are they won't take all of them, but they should take a good deal.

Don't sell them. You never know when ish could hit the fan one day with your mp3 player or hard drives. Just keep them.

I'm not worried about that. I have my collection saved in 5 places (an mp3 player, 2 HDDs, a computer and on DVDs.) Id rather sell then let them collect dust.

That is what I have done with mine, but haven't placed it on DVD's. If I unload mine I will get an 2nd external drive that will also be backup, can't lose those tunes.

Sold about 200 of mine at a local indie shop here in Austin. Got what I thought was fair. On a related note, I read somewhere that after you burn a CD to your HD and put it on an Ipod or other MP3 player, that up to 60% of the music is missing/distorted in order to conserve data space...is this true?

Well, MP3's are not a lossless technology...The whole idea behind MP3 is that you're compressing a song into a smaller size, at the risk of losing some of the sound.

I think (here's where I am not 100% sure) that if you use a high enough bitrate when ripping you can get to the point where you'd have to have a crazy good set of ears to hear the difference between a raw (.wav) file and a mp3.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)
