How are you asking that? Do you mean "I don't listen to much Lupe and am curious as to why people like him." or do you mean "I don't understand why people like Lupe's music."

The first. I never really took time to listen to his music. Any recommendations?

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

I personally love Lupe for a number of reasons. Subject matter, lyrical prowess, his ability to maintain a high level of energy at live shows from beginning to end (especially in smaller, more intimate venues)

His subject matter is much more appealing to me than most rappers in the game. For example, if you listen to Daydreamin' and The Instrumental (my two favorite songs off of Food & Liquor), he speaks about how the media glorifies the typical lifestyle most mainstream rappers always talk about in their music. I tend to like when MCs are critical towards the current state of Hip Hop. I often wonder if the casual Lupe listener realizes that he's being sarcastic in Daydreamin'.
Songs I recommend with meaningful lyrics: American Terrorist, Intruder Alert, He Say/She Say, Little Weapon
(And I'm not even getting into the three characters he's created in his music. If you aren't fully aware of these characters, you are not a true Lupe fan by my standards. Here's a hint: Observe the cover art for "Lupe Fiasco's The Cool")

Also, the way he is able to get his point across by weaving a web of poetry is absolutely beautiful. His songs require a lot of playback to catch all of his metaphors, allusions, analogies, references, etc. It reminds me of how I felt in high school when I tried to dissect Shakespeare. There's a lot of digging under the surface.
Songs I recommend that fully exemplify Lupe's lyrical prowess are "Theme Music to a Drive-By", "Dumb it Down", "Go Go Gadget Flow"

Lastly, his stage presence. The best live show. You have to see this guy perform. He has this aura about him that just exudes with energy. He captures the audience in this bubble of musical intoxication and doesn't let us go until the spot light drops and the house lights turn on. It's even better when he performs with a live band. In order to fully experience what I'm talking about, he has to have a full band. Out of the six times I've seen him, I've only completely lost myself twice (and one of them was for free!).
If you want an idea of what I'm talking about, youtube his performance of Superstar at the Chicago HOBs or any of his performances of Daydreamin'. But video recordings will not do them justice; there's no aura, no emotion, no passion.

I'm going to see him again next Sunday (second time watching Steppin Laser). I make it a goal to see him every time he's in SoCal. Saw him both times Glow in the Dark came to LA. I drove down to San Diego and out to Inland Empire to see him. He's definitely a must see, even to a casual fan.

Wow look at me rambling. I need to wake up in 5 hours to work a graveyard. X_X Well, hope this gave you a "little" idea of what Lupe's all about. Thank you if you took the time to read it all.

I remember when my roommate told me he wasn't feeling Lupe. I almost **** myself. But then again, he has everything from Soulja Boy to wack *** pop music on his cd's.

Anyways, Charles Hamilton is back. Check out "Press C", the latest from him. I've had this song on repeat for the last half hour. Also, I went through this thread and heard some high praise for B.o.B., so I decided to give him a listen. Wow, this dude is serious and no doubt is the future. The track with him and Charles Hamilton is nice and also the one with Em is heat.

I'm so glad you clarified darlon.

Yeah, Lupe is a beast and is far and away my favorite rapper. Just cop any Lupe album or mixtape and you'll see why. Really give his lyrics a chance to sit with you. Listen to his "Enemy of the State" mixtape since it's short, new, and tells you what Lupe is all about (lyrically).

On to my favorite rapper's favorite rapper, I don't know if it's been mentioned, but apparently Nas and Damien Marley are doing a full album together (interesting). I LOVE their new single which has got me excited.

That song's old, but the Nas verse gives me chills whenever I hear it... pure poetry.

I'm guessing only about 15% of females thought this dude (Degrassi days) was attractive with the majority of those girls being under the age of 17.

Funny what fame, prosperity and status can do for a dude.

                                LOL. Jimmy.
