Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Looking at that list makes me wonder if we are ever gonna get another rapper who has a career like a Jay, Em, Nas, etc.....

someone who drops close to 10 albums and isn't some huge mainstream star right from the beginning but evolves into what ppl eventually consider one of the best ever. Nowadays ppl and the media proclaim these dudes as the next big thing before they even have an album out.

I think T.I. is working his way to be in that category. He's highly popular, he drops his 7th album this summer, and has steadily improved commercially and lyrically with each album. Plus he's 29 right now, so he still has some years in him.

Kanye got in the game a little too late, as he's already 33. Lupe is my guy, but he just doesn't have the commercial appeal to blow up and is too alternative for some hip hop heads. J. Cole is one new artists who "gets it", but I don't know if he'll ever blow up either, though I see him having a nice and modest career similar to a Lupe.

Meh, I've always thought T.I's Music was up and down. He'll have one good album and then he'll have one bad album and then he'll have another good album and then one bad album.

Every TI song sounds exactly the same to me but i gotta admit i haven't heard everything he's done. Some pretty nice beats and a mellow catchy flow but he's nothing special like the others mentioned from what i have seen. I might have to go find some of his less commercial stuff and give it a listen......

My only complaint with the new Recovery album is that i can't play it in the car with my daughter in there. I can't subject my 2 year old to F this and rapist that so but i really want to bump Em on the way to and from work. It really is good to have the real Eminem back.....

That's somewhat true because I'm Serious I didn't like that much, then Trap Musik was FIRE, Urban Legend was decent, King was kinda ill, TI vs TIP had like 4-5 songs I liked, and Paper Trail was dope. I hope this next album doesn't suck.

I used to feel the same about Jay-Z until like 2001. Go check out Trap Musik, specifically songs like "I Still Luv U" and "Doin My Job" and even on Live Your Life off Paper Trail, that was a commercial single, but he was spittin on that joint.

U need to listen to it when she go to bed, but then again, the wife/girlfriend gonna need your time. I don't know what to say bruh...LOL

That's all I was saying. I never said he was as ill as Nas, Jay or Em. And he did it without initial hype.

Thanks for the tip. I really haven't listen to anything from him before TI vs TIP so i'll have to go look into it.

                      I vote for Lupe..

Music change every 10 years (as far as hip hop and R&B) I think people will embrace him...

                      LASERS will do its job...

If LASERS came out 5-10 years ago then yea. But right now, other than the "Conscious Hip Hop" listeners, not too many more people will embrace unfortunately. And it's not because of him either, but we all know why he won't BLOW UP like he should.

Also Lupe doesn't really have the star persona of TI and Jay Z.... but neither does Nas and it worked out for him.

I like old TI alot more, although I haven't listened to all of Paper Trail. While I liked Live your Life (aside from him coming off a bit preachy, esp given the situation he was in), I was WAY turned off by Whatever you Like.

Yeah, it would be like if you judged Jay-Z from Vol 3 on, or Nas from I Am... on, etc...

I'm not really a big Luda fan to be honest. I like some of his songs, but he doesn't really make any personal songs, and that's part of what I look for in an artist. He's one of the best rappers skillwise, he makes bangers, but I gotta be in a certain mood to listen to him.

Yeah he has skill and charisma, but he's also in a bad situation. His first album got leaked MONTHS early, and while Food and Liquor retail was good, the one that got leaked was superior. And the leak obviously affected his sales greatly leaking THAT early.

He gained some momentum after The Cool, but once again, his label isn't riding the wave. Lupe only wanted to do one more album, but he's signed to do like 5 more, so I can see how that could possibly affect his passion and cause frustration. Imagine you have a project you have to do, and u wanna do it on your own terms, so u wanna take your time and make it spectacular, then your boss tells u that you gotta do like 5 more to fulfill your obligation. You're not gonna approach each project with the same fire.

Not to mention his partner in crime (no pun intended) is currently doing time for drug trafficking.

Growing Pains by Luda is a great song, he only has one verse but its a nice personal song by him

For whatever reason I feel like all Luda's personal songs come off as talking about somebody, not necessarily him. For whatever reason they tend to lack sincerity, for me at least.
