First off, what a brilliant song lyrically and musically. I've been listening to it recently several times over and was curious about the meaning behind the lyrics? I know Don McLean won't come out and explain the reason behind the lyrics, and I know there are many theories out there as to what the song means. However, I'm intrigued by each line of the song. It's so random, yet so fluid at the same time. I know the whole gist is about the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper, but the lyrics are very interesting. This makes for IMO, the best song in music history lyrically speaking. Here is a random thought from a selected lyric.
Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
Is this McLean talking about being at a Rolling Stones concert? Jumpin Jack Flash? Just a part of the song I know, but it's a classic I would love to hear some insight.
Anyway. What are your theories on this song? I'm talking line by line.
