Well let me rephrase, I use my laptop all the time where I would have available power, I just don't like the power cord hanging off the back.

I just assumed that other people buy laptops because its portable and it doesn't have to be plugged into power all the time.

OK so what is the verdict? I just bought a new HP laptop and now I am really concerned. I always keep it pug in on my desk. Unless it is off. I unplug it when it is off.

if it's a lithium ion battery you should be able to leave it plugged in all the time.

I keep mine plugged in all the time. When the battery dies it dies.

Cool I believe it is. It really is nice. My other Laptop was 5 years old, but it was getting worn. So I bought this one for under $700 and it has a web cam. That is kinda of cool. MY other one I spent $1200 and it had less than this one has. Go figure.

I bought my laptop to use down stairs because our desktop is up stairs. Got tired of running up and down the stairs every time I wanted to check something.

Count me in as another person that removes the battery whenever it's not necessary. Might take a few days to get used to, though! The first time I did that, I unplugged my laptop from the wall thinking the battery was still on and, of course, it did a premature shutdown.

Here's my thinking, though. Would you charge a cell phone all the time (and use it all the time while plugged in)? Probably not.

THe only thing is. If you do that to a cell and it is pug in, you might not be around for the next call.

Re: Is it bad to leave laptop plugged in all the time?

From the help section on my new Lenovo laptop:

If you frequently drain and then recharge a lithium-ion battery, it can quickly lose its ability to hold a charge. The practice of completely draining and then fully charging a battery is advice that applied to nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries and, to a lesser extent, nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Lithium-ion batteries last longer if you charge them often, a little at a time, to maintain a minimum charge of about 40 percent capacity.

It USED to be bad. Batteries are designed differently these days. Like the link pointed out - they're designed with the expectation that people will have them plugged in a lot anyway.

Used to be that batteries kind of had a "memory", and that letting them drain and refill would keep them up to speed - while never letting it die out would for some reason slowly kill it.

This isn't true anymore. Leave it plugged in all you want.

Yeah...sure, a little over time it might not be ideal for the battery, but I'm a lazy mofo and my time/energy is worth having to get a new battery a little sooner than I might have otherwise. Plus it's really not bad like they've said....it's like people who are "hyper drivers", yeah, you get more MPG but you also have to jump through a lot of hoops...just not gonna do that here.

I run my laptop off the battery all the time, until the warning message pops up telling me I only have 10% of a charge left, then I plug it in. Once it's fully charged, I unplug it and run it off the battery again.

It's also what I do with my cell, it's on all the time, and only gets plugged in when the battery is low. I also unplug it when it's fully charged.

The reason I do it this way is because on my first laptop, I left it plugged in all the time (unless I needed it to be portable, obviously) and it eventually got to the point that I couldn't run it off the battery, as it wouldn't hold a charge.

Edit: It sounds like more of a pain in the neck than it would be to have it constantly plugged in, but it's really not.

I bought my laptop in October 2005 and recently had to replace the whole battery and power adapter. Battery progressively got worse because I would always have it plugged in. Now, I keep it plugged in a lot of the time but I've been cycling it down more. I can get about 3:15 or so off my battery. When I FIRST got my new battery, it was able to do 4 hours off the battery.

                              Word on that.

I bought a laptop because I don't feel like having a large computer clogging up my room. I've never taken it anywhere, and I leave it plugged in all the time.

Plus, laptops are always nice if you ever want to like, watch porn on a rooftop. Nobody wants to carry a desktop up for a moonlit session. Real talk.

Definitely not. Having to carry down the desktop down after all that? Major buzzkill.
