At the Watchmen panel, Zack Snyder expressed his love for Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, in response to a question about the more mature direction of comic book adaptations.

“There are a lot of other graphic novels out there, but I would love to see Frank Miller’s Dark Knight made into a movie, but that’s just me.”


Later at the Entertainment Weekly Visionaries panel, Frank Miller told Snyder “You can do it anytime you want to Zack”. To which Snyder said he was making a note of Miller’s response. Now I know this is very speculative, but even Batman producer Michael Uslan has already expressed interest in a possible adaptation.

Thoughts? I wouldn't mind seeing it happen, as long as its after Nolan's Batman 3.

Imagine, though...

Snyder, a couple of years down the road, gets an older Bale to play the part...it would be pretty ****in' cool.

But, even if that doesn't work...I wouldn't mind seeing it come to life. It's one of my favorite graphic novels...as long as they don't make it too Sin-City-esque.

It would be cool with a much older Bale but I don't see that happening either.

They'll just go with an older actor to play Batman.

I haven't read the entire graphic novel, though I own it and really need to finish it, but from what I've seen, flipping through the pages, Superman is in this, right?

How do you figure they'll do that?

I'd imagine both are individual properties and including them in the same film would be difficult.

• Superman, aka Clark Kent, is a pawn for the US government. He has agreed to stay out of sight and obey orders. His internal monologues show that he detests having to be a government weapon and is only doing so to prevent war between humans and superheroes. His existence seems to be secret: when incidents involving him are reported on the TV news, the main newscaster is constantly prevented from naming or making distinctive references to the Man of Steel (In fact, nowhere in the novel does the word "Superman" appear). Unlike the other classic DC characters who appear in the novel, Superman shows no signs of having aged. He is still as powerful and virile as ever, implying that he either has considerably longer lifespan, ages differently than humans, or possibly immortal.

I put it in spoilers just to be safe, though I don't think it really spoils anything.

I would avoid this movie like the black plague if Clooney was cast as Bruce Wayne.

Yankee, Warner Bros. should own rights to both Superman and Batman (I mean, that JLA movie was actually on the table for awhile), so getting them together on the big-screen wouldn't be that far fetched.

WB owns the right to every DC character after all they own DC Comics So that's not a problem.

I wouldn't mind this but we'll need a considerably older actor to play Batman. I think Clooney is too much of a pretty boy as Bats is pretty effed up and scarred in the graphic novel. I can't really think of anyone who can do it off the top of my head.

It definitely needs to be done after Nolan's Batman movies as doing Dark Knight Returns before the 3rd Nolan movie would probably confuse the public.

I'm probably gonna pick up the GN after I'm done with the Watchmen. I'm starting to really get into these with the influx of GN movies that have been out and are coming out.

How old is Batman suppose to be? Is he a senior? Or in his 50's?

You don't really need that old of an actor to make it work. These days its very easy to make some look 20-30 years older and have it look authentic. Nowadays they're even able to make someone look 20 years younger on film.

This would be a tough film to get made. Seeing how its a 4 issue mini series instead of a one shot GN, there is a lot of material to cover, what gets cut out? To do it right you need all the characters from the mini.

A 2 1/2 hour movie just can't do it justice.

I think any movie adaptation would concentrate on the Superman/Joker storylines.
