    DVD Screen/Still Capture

I have some screens from a couple DVDs I want to capture and use for backgrounds, avatars, etc. I was able to do this on my old desktop computer which came with Power DVD, but with my new Dell laptop I'm not having the same success. For some reason my DVDs don't play in WMP, but in Dell's Media Direct program which wouldn't be a program, but I cannot find any icon/option that will let me pause and capture a screen. Even when I pause, print screen, and copy to Paint, it doesn't save properly (blank screen).

Anybody have any suggestions or know of any free media players I can get that will let me do this?

I've been hearing about VLC players. A lot of people use it at a community that i'm in.

VLC isn't working right for me. Every time I chose to do snapshot, I get an error message and VLC closes.

Hey fresh you could try "Prt Scr" button the bring it into MS paint and crop then save out as jpeg. Could save out as jpeg then enhance more in photoshop if you wanted.

          does that make sense?

I tried that first, actually. I think I was just copying the overlay, though, since whenever I would play the DVD, the image in MS Paint would play too. Plus, even when I tried cropping and saving the image still saved as a black/blank screen.

Hmm strange I will test it out in a few.

You could try Windows Media Player Classic if VLC isn't working for you. It has a take screenshot option when playing video.
