    Need Some Computer Help

I'm posting here about some problems i have been having with my laptop. I run windows xp and it is a 2 year old toshiba laptop. A few months ago i noticed i was having some speed issues with my lapotp. It was stuttering and lagging and it was getting progressively worse and worse. I had to wait until the summer so i could earn some money, i went off an bought a gb of ram and put that into place. Well there a very small noticeable difference.

In fact things got worse and worse until 2 days ago i was unable to load the computer, not even into safe mode. I was getting the blue screen etc. So i tried to boot up the computer using the recovery disc that came with my laptop, i was attemtping to reboot the computer while not deleting my harddrive, in fact i selected to not delete any hard drive partitions.

So anyway the process ends after about an hour and i load up my computer and it is struggling to load, it is still freezing etc. I have to go through the process of setting up the computer like i did when i first got it. Problem is when it finally loads to the desktop everything is brand new. All my files are gone and under the properties it says my hard drive has 75 gb available. Problem is my computer is as slow as ever, things dont start up when click the computer is constantly freezing etc. So i dont think i erased my hard drive completly i just cant access my files.

My question is basically am i screwed? IS it beyond all repair? And more importantly for me have i lost all my files for good? I called Geek Sqaud and attempted to do some research into hard drive recovery and alot of it is over my head. Besides geek squad seems kinda pricey for something that is seemingly not so difficult. IF anyone can shed any light on my situation it would be greatly appreciated.

If the ram made it worse, take it out. Your windows files were most likely moved to windows.old or .001, some backup folder. That is if you didn't format it. It installs windows over top of the other one and you will need to install your programs again, setup, etc. You could try making a boot disk or cd and going into dos and looking at the hard drive.

ASB, you noticed anything out of the ordinary running or hogging the system resources when looking at Task Manager?

No I remember checking that before my computer went capoot. I think what it was was that my hard drive was being filled up and i was looking to get an external drive to move all of my music and movie files over. Whats my best approach to recovering my files i think as the previous poster mentioned i may have installed windows over my windows.

If you used the recovery disk, most likely you installed over your partition unless there was a repair option. Take out the new memory and try starting up your system, see if its any different. When you put in the new chip, did it prompt you when you started windows that your memory changed? Maybe you have a bad chip, which is very likely to have happened.

As for your files on your hard drive.. most likely its gone. You can get Geek Squad to restore it for you, but it can cost a pretty penny.

I'll have to give that a try. I'm just afraid to do anything else because I don't want to risk losing my files, would geek squad be the best way to go because they are very expensive. I do have some contacts who work with computers on a regular basis is this something they can do or even I can do with the right program?
