Can anyone help me pick a new external hard drive?

So I am looking into picking up an external hard drive to store my music video and photo files. I want something that is reliable first and foremost...I keep reading about some drives that don't last more than 17 months. I want something that i can use for my laptop as well as my ps3. I want to be able to plug the hard drive into my ps3 so i can view movies from my tv. As far as size and price go i am looking for something in the 500gb range and something in the $80-$110 range. As always any help is appreciated and any personal experience or recommendations are great too.

I've got a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500 GB external, I love it haven't had a single problem with it. It's a little more then you're looking to spend but IMO it's worth the price.

We have like almost the exact same. I have the Essential Edition, but I don't know the difference. I haven't used it yet... do you just copy everything to it or is there something that does it for you?

I only have a 300 something gig but I think that Western digital is the way to go.

The Home Edition has a auto backup feature, I use mine for all my media.

I was thinking about going with a WD anyway but read about some reliability issues. Does anyone have experience in connecting them to a ps3?

I had a thread like this a couple months ago actually. I ended up with the LaCie Big Disk 500 gb Hdd. I bought it off ebay for about $66. The seller was having problems on his mac with it and said he hadn't tried it with a regular PC though and most people stayed away from it but I snagged it. Works fine for me. Lacie also had the most consistant good reviews throughout the sites I checked.

I bought one of these recently. Haven't had any problems with it so far. Backed up a bunch of files to it when i switched over to vista.

I also have an older WD 80gig external hd. Not sure what its called but this thing has pretty much been powered on for about 2 years straight so I can vouch for Western Digital's reliability.

Try using www.techbargains.com to find an external. That site is money for awesome deals.
