Computer Help
So, I start up my new laptop this morning (I got it from Dell in May) and see that its not performing normally. When I shut it down last night everything was working fine, so I'm not really sure whats happened. I can start up and get to my desktop, but then everything runs slow, programs don't respond, and I can't connect to my wireless network. I tried doing several system restores, but all of them have been unable to complete the process. I'm not really sure what is wrong since everything has been working fine until this morning. I didn't have time to call Dell today, but I plan on doing it tomorrow. Any thoughts? I'm not really sure what to do since system restore doesn't do anything.

Re: Computer Help
I did a pre-boot system diagnostics this morning and I got the following:
Hard Drive - DTS Short Test: FAIL
Error Code: 0148
Msg: error code 2000-0148
Msg: Unit 1: IDE Error: status 3E No Additional Sense
Can somebody translate?

Re: Computer Help
Years ago, I had a 486 whose hard drive would always fail at the POST - probably because of the hard drive controller. I'd guess you need a new hard drive. Best to call Dell asap.
I'm not really sure, but your data might be salvageable."We were expecting a miracle with Elite, but instead we got Jesus at halfcourt."

Re: Computer Help
So, I just got done chatting with Dell via online chat support (a lot less awkward, by the way). I went through two guys. I disconnected with the first guy who seemed to know what he was doing as he was directing me to the Partition Diagnostics Test to test the HDD. Before I could get there I was disconnected. By the time I get to the second guy, I'm already there and he has be doing an "extended system" test. He comments that he doesn't believe it to be a HDD problem but a software problem. I then get a DISK error message (bitch slap to his face) and he then says its a HDD problem and they will send me another in "3-5 working days."
Now, thats all well and good, but another problem now arises since I have to replace and install everything myself. My copy of MS Office 2007 can only be registered on 3 computers and this laptop was numero 3. I tell this guy this to see what could be done. Apparently I cannot get compensated for it (ie: no CD can be sent since it wasn't a part of my original order) and he can't credit my account because that would "not be possible." Apparently I have to through MS whenever I install it to see if they'll allow me to use it and if not I have to purchase another copy. Then the guy has the nerve to try and sell me the ****. I told him a couple times that I don't believe I should have to purchase another copy myself since their hardware was faulty, but that obviously got no where.
So, all in all at least (hopefully) the laptop will be fixed by next weekend.
Anyway, I'm just a little bit curious, is this a problem exclusive to laptops, is it common, or what?

Re: Computer Help
Ha, great. Hopefully this one actually lasts longer than 3 months. I'm still a little mad that they couldn't do anything about my MS Office.

Re: Computer Help
My last Dell's hard drive gave out on me as well, but it did last for about 3 years. I've had a Dell for work for over a year now with no problems.
Sucks about MS Office, I can see why that isn't technically their problem, but they should at least be able to provide something you can present to MS saying it was Dell's crappy HDD that screwed you.Comment

Re: Computer Help
For Office, just keep the paperwork and show MS it. Most likely you can only install it on 3 different computers, but usually only changing the hard drive wouldn't count as the CPU, BIOS, Chipset, etc has not changed. They use more than the hard drive for the registering/activating the software because it would be a pain if every time your hard drive failed, it killed your license key.Comment
