    Somebody educate me on that cellular phone stuff

    Well back now at VT and I can't get cell phone service to save my life. I'm lucky to get one bar if I stand by the printer for some reason. Aside from that I can't get any in the building at all. I was getting text messages today when I was at wal-mart that were sent like 24 hours prior. And you know as a college student cell phones are more important than education, so I need to make a switch fast!

    Right now I'm on virgin mobile. Crappy phones, crappy reception, great plans. I survived back when I was at home although I couldn't get any service when I was in high school.

    I would prefer a prepaid or pay-as-you-go type plan. Right now, though, a deal on a Sidekick caught my eye but I would be locked into a 2 year contract. Anybody have suggestions?

      There are ways of getting out of a contract without paying an ETF. I have AT&T with the iPhone and I get great reception. How much are you wanting to pay a month? AT&T also has a pay as you go.

          Talk to the students at your school and find out who else is getting good coverage and who is not.

          Chances are, other people with Virgin are struggling. You may need to find the phone service that best covers your school.

              FWIW, I believe T-Mobile works well in Blacksburg. My GF had it and she never complained until she got to Raddy.

                  Well most people don't have VM anyway but I already know they're notoriously not-so-good with service. Pretty much anywhere in a city I'm good but the further away I get, the worse it gets. And I don't really know anyone with a T-Mobile.

                  Also, I'm a broke college student so I can't spend a whole lot of money on a phone. I will not buy an iPhone. Oh, I forgot to mention that there's a special promotion I could take advantage of where I could get a Sidekick for $50, but thats where the 2 year contract comes in. And I think it said the ETF was $400. But I don't think I'd switch anytime soon anyway.

                      Ok...well I've determined Verizon is probably the best bet right now. From what I've seen and heard they have the best service down here in Blacksburg. Now anybody have recommendations on a phone?

                          EnV 2 and the Voyager are both great phones, the EnV 2 is just a great overall phone and with the smaller outer screen it is much easier to have without breaking. My Voyager though is holding up great and I have nothing negative to say about it.

                              Co-sign on EnV2.

                              And I know you'll see this as UVA bias, but trust me, Blacksburg is a hell hole for cell phone service... regardless of the carrier. It's in the middle of nowhere, and you're going to have trouble finding "great" service anywhere inside city limits.

                                  Ntelos was alright... Cingular (now AT&T) was decent for a lot of my classmates.
